Long before you had netbooks and proper PDAs, HP introduced its first handheld computer in 1982. It wastiny– we’re talking 10- by 5- by 1-inches. To put that in perspective, that’s about the size of a magazine.

    It packed a whopping 48K ROM and 16K RAM (and three ROM expansion ports), the HP-75C ran BASIC and VisiCalc. Back then, it was a number of things – including one of the earliest organizers. The appointment alarm mode would let you set one of 10 alarms styles (like the ever-so-popular “A short chirp” or the more hardcore “A series of eight siren sounds”) and attach a text file to the alarm.

A repository for field data that eventually would be transmitted into a host computer, it accommodated peripherals such as a modem, and printer/plotter, all of which could fit easily into a briefcase. It was flexible enough that you could save your data to RAM, ROM, magnetic card or digital cassette drive. It was aimed at technical users – and it was certainly a lot more portable than the HP-110. At the time, you could buy it for the low, low price of $995 in 1980 dollars. I just did a quick search on eBay and you could have a full kit of HP history for $795 (in 2010 dollars).
