While some companies were tinkering with making mice in the early 1980s, HP produced its first commercial touchscreen computer, the HP-150, in 1983.

    The PC had an MS-DOS operating system and an Intel 8088 microprocessor and it was originally envisioned as a data terminal with touchable on-screen blocks. The team started brainstorming creative new ways to harness that screen. Of course, they needed to balance software features with the required hardware and keep the price right (A premier version of the 150, named the Touch Screen Personal Computer, sold for $3,495 in 1984).

    The HP-150 was introduced with twin 3-1/2 inch HP 9121 disc drives—the first commercially available 3-1/2 inch floppy-disk drives in the United States. These drives were less expensive, more reliable and held the same amount of information as the 5-1/4 inch IBM-compatible drives. But people remember it best as a precursor to the TouchSmart computers that HP offers today.

    What else happened in 1983? ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), created by the United States Department of Defense, switched to the TCP/IP protocols to become a  component of what is now the Internet. It’s the year that computer scientist Jaron Zepel Lanier coined the term “Virtual Reality.”This was also a year that will live in productivity. The spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3 launched and on October 25, one little company released its first word-processing program. Microsoft Word.Since then, Microsoft has added boatloads of additional features with each iteration.
