一，痛苦的性质

        在种种人生的感受中，痛苦的性质是非常纯粹的，值得探究。

        有时候，我想，即便一个人会丧失各种感受，他/她也未必会失去对痛苦的感受。

        王尔德这样说喜悦与痛苦的区别：

        “Behind joy and laughter there may be a temperament, coarse, hard and callous. But behind sorrow there is always sorrow. Pain, unlike pleasure, wears no mask.”

(“欢笑的背后是一种情绪，它粗鲁、坚硬、冷酷。而痛苦的背后还是痛苦。不同于欢愉的，痛苦不带面具。……我不如说痛苦的背后有一个灵魂！而嘲笑一个苦痛的灵魂是多么恐怖的事。”)

        C. S. Lewis在追怀他的亡妻的一本书里说：

        “Part of every misery is, so to speak, the misery's shadow or reflection: the fact that you don't merely suffer but have to keep on thinking about the fact that you suffer. I not only live each endless day in grief, but live each day thinking about living each day in grief.”

        这样说来，痛苦是恒久的，晦暗的，无限的，纯粹的，无际无涯的，是不但让你痛苦而且不断地让你意识到自己在痛苦的。
