Agreement of Subjects and
Verbs
Present tense verbs change form to show number.
The plural form of a verb is its base form. It does not end in -s.
Use the plural form of a verb with a plural subject.
Birdwatchers look for unusual birds.
We enjoy
the challenge.
Also use the plural form of a verb with I and
you.
I meet
nice people on bird walks.
You see
more birds with help from others.
The singular form of almost every verb is its
base form plus -s or -es. Use the singular form of a verb with a
third-person singular subject. (A subject is third-person singular
if you can replace it with he, she, or it.)
Every
birdwatcher looks for unusual birds.
Nobody
enjoys a challenge more than Joe does.
Here are the important exceptions to the above
rules:
- The plural form
of be is are (we are, you are, they are).
- Be has two
singular forms, am and is. Use am with I (I am). Use is with he,
she, and it (he is, she is, it is).
- The singular
form of the verb have is has (he, she, or it has). The plural form
is have (we have, they have).
