A Trip to the Grand
Canyon
Blanche was 87 years old and lived in Arizona
with her caregiver, Agnes. Agnes took very good care of Blanche.
She cooked and cleaned for Blanche. She drove Blanche where she
needed to go. And, thanks to Agnes, Blanche was able to do a lot
more things than many people did at her age.
At times, Blanche could be childish and
unreasonable. She didn't understand why Agnes couldn't always do
what she wanted: "Why can't you give me strawberry jam? Why can't
you get that stain out of the carpet?"
But Agnes was very tolerant and gently explained
things to Blanche. "You finished the strawberry jam yesterday. And
I've tried everything. That stain won't come out."
One day, Agnes took Blanche on a long drive to
see the Grand Canyon. Agnes stopped at various places along the rim
and helped Blanche out of the car. Blanche and Agnes both thought
that the Grand Canyon was absolutely magnificent.
At on point, Blanche noticed a group of hikers
getting ready to walk down into the Grand Canyon. "I want to go
down there, too," said Blanche.
Agnes laughed and said, "There are only two ways
to go down there. You can hike. Or you can ride on a
mule."
"Hmm," said Blanche. "I don't think I can hike
at my age. And I don't want to fall off a mule. Why can't you drive
me?"
