Verbs
A verb is a word that names an
action or a state of being. Every sentence has at least one verb.
An action verb shows an action that the
subject does.
Verbs that show state of being
are linking verbs. A linking verb links a noun with another
noun or pronoun, of with an adjective that describes the noun.
Common linking verbs include: is, am, are, was, and
were.
Some verbs are used as
helping verbs with other verbs. Can, must, will, shall,
were, have, should, and must are some common helping
verbs.
Every verb has important forms
called principal parts. The following chart names the three
principal parts and gives examples of some verbs.
Present Tense: look,
use,
see,
find
Past Tense: looked,
used,
saw,
found
Past Participle: looked,
used,
seen,
found
A regular verb is one whose
past tense and past participle are both formed by adding -ed
or -d to the present tense form. Look and use, for example,
are regular verbs.
An irregular verb is one whose
principal parts do not follow this pattern. see and find are
irregular verbs.
