反身代词可以和许多介词构成介词短语, 在句中主要用作状语, 有几个还可用作表语.常见的有:
1.
Oh, she really is getting above herself! 哦,她确实变得越来越自高自大了.
He was a little flushed, a little, as nurses used to say, “above himself” 他有点儿激动,就像护士们常说的那样, 有点儿 “情绪不正常”.
2.
You must settle the matter among yourselves. 此事必须由你们自己来解决.
They talked about the matter among themselves. 他们一起讨论了那件事.
3.
I have seen more decent men above or below themselves with drink than I care to thinkabout. 我见过不少正派人酒后不是兴奋异常,就是神情沮丧, 人数之多我都懒得去想了. (反身代词随宾语变化, 因为above or below themselves是宾语补语).
4. beside oneself 非常激动, 控制不住自己
They were beside themselves in joy after they had beaten the rival team in basketball. 篮球赛中他们击败了对手,为此他们欣喜若狂.
He was beside himself with grief. 他悲痛异常.
5.between ourselves 只限于我们知道而不外传, 私下说(主语一般为第一人称复数)
Between ourselves, I don’t think he will live much longer. 就咱们私下说吧, 我想他活不了多久了.
6. by oneself 独自地, 单独地, 独力地
Such an invalid as Mrs. Long is no more fit to live by herself than a three-year-old would be. 像朗夫人这样的病人不宜独居, 就像三岁孩童不宜独居一样.
John built a flying model airplane by himself. 约翰完全靠自己做成一架飞机模型.
7. for oneself 为自己, 亲自; 独自(此义有时可与by oneself 换用)
Did he write something only for himself? 他仅仅为了自己而写作吗?
If you don’t believe me, you can see for yourself. 如果你不相信我的话, 你可以亲自去了解嘛.
8. in oneself
Australia is a continent in itself 澳大利亚本身就是一个大陆.
He was most eager to see who this person would be—this woman named Rosa Sandoval who was now to hear of murder in the world and to feel it in herself. 他异常急切地想看到这人会怎样—这位叫罗莎桑多瓦尔的妇人, 她就要听到人世间的凶杀并在内心感受到它.
9. of oneself 自行,自动地 (不受外界干扰)
He had not even thought of saying this, but it was suddenly said of itself. 他甚至想都没有想过要说这件事,可却突然脱口说了出来.
The enemy will not perish of itself. 敌人是不会自行消灭的.
10. on/upon oneself 负责,代行其职 (多与take连用)
You should not have taken it upon yourself to accept the invitation for the whole family. 你不该代表全家接受邀请.
11. over oneself 急于做(与fall 连用)
They almost fell over themselves in the anxiety to get there quickly. 他们急于快点儿赶到那里, 差一点跌跤.
12. to oneself 暗中, 私下, 单独, 我行我素 (多与leave, keep 连用)
Bill laughed to himself when John fell down. 约翰摔倒时比尔暗暗发笑.
When one dines in a restaurant one likes a table to oneself. 人们在饭馆吃饭时, 喜欢独占一张桌子.
The teacher left Mary to herself to solve the problem. 老师让玛丽自己去解决那个问题.
