FEBRUARY, in the Gregorian calendar, is the second month of the year. It has 28 days, 29 in leap year (q. v.). When the old Roman 10-month calendar beginning with March was reformed about 700 B. c., two new months, January and February, were added at the end of the year. In the Julian calendar of 45 B. C. an extra day was added to February every 4 years to make the calendar equal the solar year. February, named for Februus, the Roman god of purification, was the month of purification before the new year. It included the festivals of February for repentance, Lupercalia for the purification of women, and Feralia honoring the dead.
The Anglo-Saxons called February “Kale Month” because kale was their chief food then. In the French Revolutionary calendar, February corresponded to part of the months Pluviose (month of rain) and Ventose (month of wind).
Days of note in February include Candlemas and Groundhog Day (both February 2), Valentine’s Day (February 14), and the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12, 1809) and George Washington (Feb. 22, 1732). The birthstone for February is the amethyst; the flowers are the violet and the primrose. See also CALENDAR.
