     Journey to the West. is one of the four great classical novels in Chinese literature. It was written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty. In English-speaking countries, the work is widely known as Monkey.

     The novel has 100 chapters. It can be divided into four parts. The first part includes chapters 1-7, and it is an introduction to the main story.  It deals with the earlier exploits of Sun Wukong, The second part, from Chapter 8 to Chapter 12, talks about the monk, Xuanzang, and the background of his great journey. The third and the  longest section of the work is chapters 13-99. It is the details of the unforgettable journey. The section is set in the poor lands along the Silk Road between China and India, including Xinjiang, Turkestan (土耳其斯坦), and Afghanistan (阿富汗). They overcome many difficulties all the way and make friends with each other. Chapter 100, the last of all, quickly describes the return journey to the Tang Empire, and the rewards that each traveller receives.

    Nowadays, Journey to the West has been made into TV plays, cartoons and films and it is still very popular all around the world.
