At first, my decision to take Chinese was based on the need for a foreign language class. I chose Chinese because of my interest in Far Eastern culture. I thought it would be hard because that’s what I had heard, but I was enthusiastic. Language has always been easy for me, and I wanted to test myself. I had no idea how it would change my future.
The personal impact studying Chinese has made on me is a part of that change. Studying Chinese has fed my curiosity. I want to know more about China; I want to discover this ancient, complex land and its people with my own experience. My fascination with Asian culture has grown from the glimpses I’ve caught in the classroom. Quite simply, I’d like to go there.
Chinese has also inspired a change in career choice. Before, I thought I would be a writer or teacher. Now I want to go to China and teach English to Chinese students. I am talented in English, and with some more years of studying, I could become fluent in Chinese. What a better way to unite my own interests with my skills!
I feel that Chinese has expanded not only my vocabulary and language skills, but my intellect as well. I find myself more accepting of new ideas and of differences. I also can work with people better and more creatively. I liked language before, but I love it now. It means a lot to me.
No matter where I end up, I shall always be happy of my decision. The experience so far has given me so much more that I ever expected. I thought it would be difficult and beneficial only to my college applications. I was so wrong. And I am so glad.
