Main task

Teaching Goals

●    To plan a TV program                                                

●    To write an outline of a story

●    To write a TV program

Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Lead-in.

There is a competition to write a story for a TV program. Daniel and Simon have entered it. If they want to write well, they first need to know the background and the plot of the TV program very well.

Step 2 Reading and Answering

Read the background and the plot of the TV program, and then answer the following questions:

1. Who is the program about? (The Chen family)

2. How many people are there in the Chen family? (Four.)

3. Who are they? (Nancy, Victor and their parents.)

4. Do the children get along well? (No, they disagree all the time.)

5. What did Nancy and Victor argue about? (What TV programs to watch.)

6. What happened to the remote control? (Victor threw it into the table and it fell onto Nancy’s foot.)

Step 3Practice

Ask the students to read the beginning of the story in part A2 on page 77, then complete it using information from the outline in part A1.

Step 4Extension Activity

Ask a few students what they think will happen next in the story. Ask them what they would do if they were the characters. Tell students to discuss these questions in pairs. Encourage them to discuss freely so that the story can develop imaginatively.

Step 5 Presentation

If you all enter the competition to write a story for a TV program, first, you have to think of an idea for a TV program. You should think about where the program takes place, the characters in the story and the personalities and favorite activities of the characters.

Step6 Practice

You are also interested in writing your own TV program for a writing competition. Work in pairs to complete the plan on page 77, and then write an outline of the story before writing the program. There are no right or wrong answers here. You can choose whichever categories you like and use your imaginations to develop the plot. You can think independently, rather than copying the outline on page 77.

Step 7 Writing

When the students have agreed on their outline, encourage them to discuss the plot of their TV programs. Then ask students to write a story for their program using the place and characters in their outline.

Step 8 Consolidation
