Teaching Goals

●To use comparative and superlative adverbs                        

Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Revision

Revise the comparative and superlative form of adjectives.

Make the following sentences orally.

1. Millie is tall, Sandy is taller than Millie, Amy is the tallest of the three.

2. Millie is careful, Sandy is more careful, Amy is the most careful of the three.

Step 2 Presentation

Like adjectives, adverbs can be used in comparative and superlative degrees where adjectives modify nouns and other adjectives, adverbs modify verbs, verb forms and adjectives.

We can form comparative and superlative adverbs in the same way as we do for comparative and superlative adjectives. Go through the grammar table at the top of page 73. Remind the students that comparative / superlative adverbs are formed by adding –er / -est to the verbs or by writing “more” / “most” in front of the verbs. Also remind the students that some adverbs are irregular, such as: well – better –best, badly –worse –worst, far –farther/further –farthest/furthest.

 Step 3 Practice

Millie wants to enter a competition held by a TV station. It wants ideas from a new TV Program. Millie has asked her classmates what they think of the different drama series on TV this month. Help her complete her report with information gathered in the survey.

Answers: 1. better than 2. better than 3. the most regularly 4. the best 5. the worst

         6. more slowly than

Step 4 Extension Activity

Choose four TV programs that are shown regularly on a local TV. It would be better if you can find four English programs that students are familiar with on the board.

Divide the students into four or five groups. Assign each group one of the TV programs listed in the table. Tell each group they must ask their classmates whether they watch the program regularly, whether they like the actors and whether they think it is a good story. Then write the scores in the table. At last, write sentences summarizing the results on the board, e.g.

The TV program with the best story is …

The TV program with the best actor is …

The TV program with the most regular viewers is …

Step 5 Consolidation

2.   Do some more consolidation exercises.
