Yesterday I was invited
to give a speech for English First's students at
their Huai Hai Lu location. I am aways glad to
see that people want to sign up at the last minute
to attend my talks... at least it shows that people are intersted
in the subjects that I speak about.
Lately as some of you might
have read my blog, I have been featuring some imported food in my
speech to let people learn more about western
food. Last night was no
exception, I brought over wine, cheese and olive
oil. Quite a lot of questions were asked about
wine appreciation, and of course about olive oil, there seems to be
very little understanding about olive oil in the market currently,
although there is quite a few olive oil being displayed in
supermarkets, I wonder if many people are buying these
oils?
The students tried the
cheese, some liked it, some didn't. Cheese is
really an acquired taste, so it will take time. I
remember when I first went to England for boarding school, I hated
eating yoghurt, because I found it too sour. Now
I love yoghurt. It just shows that some food
needs an aquired taste. Notwithstanding, after
the speech, I get a phone call from one of the English teachers at
EF asking me how he can order the cheese because he loves cheese
and thought the cheese that was featured was very
tasty.
Role-plays are central to my
training and speeches, and students seem to be very enthusiastic in
participating. When I featured the neck tie role
play, I asked if the ladies in the classroom knew how to tie one
for their boyfriends or husband. Usually it is
followed by silence... Shanghainese girls always say that they
prefer their opposite sex to tie the neck tie themselves... truly
an independent statement! At the end of the
class, however, I did have a student come up to ask me to teach her
how to tie a tie so she can go back home to surprise her
husband.
I will be hosting an EF Table
Manners training this Saturday 21 June from 12:30 to
14:30. If any EF students are intested, do sign
up at your school or talk to Jenny Liu at EF Life
Club.
