The name Mallarmé is obstinately associated with a twofold image:
that of a poetry that is carried to the quintessence of something
akin to the silence of infinite spaces; and that of an obscurity
close to the impenetrable night. Mallarmé symbolizes the poet of
obscurity par excellence. His poems, and even his prose pieces, have
a tight-knit network whose mesh counters the eye habituated to
reading a line ahead trying to grasp the meaning of the following
sentence. Matching the obscurity of the text is the figure of poet,
insomniac and sterile, grappling with the virgin sheet of paper and
the nothingness encountered in hollowing out verse. From the
letters that Mallarmé wrote as a young man, in which he confessed
his mad ambition and radical deadlock, to his last will as a poet,
in which he recommended burning the vain pile of notes destined for
the grand oeuvre of the Book, it is easy to trace a line straight
to some
confrontation with the night of the absolute, of which his
posthumously published booklet of obscure poems is said to reveal
the debris.
