课堂里
1993年11月3日上午8时,一个值得纪念的日子。我大步跨进了上海交大闵行校区“上院”308教室,一个荟萃了各地学习精英(elite;
outstanding person)的教室。
24双眼睛,同时向我射来的炯炯目光,清澈而又明亮,睿敏而又专神。这是我从来没有见到过的教室里的目光!
多少年来,我一直认为,校园最亮眼的风景在新生的眼睛里,特别是大一新生上第一节课时的眼睛里,那一双双眼睛,射出的目光,充满希望、闪烁神妙、传递灵秀。
面对着这样的眼光,我用英语开始了简单介绍。我讲:
I’m
glad to tell you that I am back now from a company to campus, so
famous a campus in China. I feel so excited when I am finally
disposed by god to have the opportunity of coming here to be a
teacher, or rather, to be your teacher here. It seems to me that
the eyes I can see right now in this classroom are the brightest,
most challenging and most ingenious. Three years in the company has
rusted my English to a certain extent, but I’ll do my utmost to
become one of the most popular teachers of yours.
(终于,我从一家公司回到了校园,一个在中国如此著名的校园。我很激动,上帝的安排,让我得到了回校园当老师的机会,或者更准确地说,在这里当你们的老师的机会。在我看来,在本教室,我所见到的眼光是迄今在教室里我见到的最明亮、最富挑战性、最机灵的眼光。我在公司呆了三年,这三年在一定程度上锈化了我的英语,但是,我将尽我所能,成为最受你们欢迎的老师之一!)
我的话音刚落,课堂里掌声响起!
我想,第一节课要获得成功,一定要避免人们通常容易落入的陷阱,即“一言堂”(one man show)。
《英语幽默语言赏析》一书刚刚出版,此书的写作,磨砺我的英语语感,继续我的学术思考,简直是一场“及时雨”,一场热身(warm-up
exercises)。
我称自己的第一堂课为preface(序言;前言),总的题目是:Choice of Words in
Writing(写作的选词)。
在泛泛地讲了注意选词的意义之后,我在黑板上写下了以下一段文字:
For instance, not
everybody in my bedroom had his own soap. Those who had no soap had
to use others’, and the owner must be resentful and would no longer
buy soap. As a result there was no soap in our room and no one
mentioned the word ‘soap’. Some even used the soap in other
bedrooms.
(比如,并不是我们寝室的每一个人都有自己的肥皂。那些没有肥皂的就不得不使用别人的肥皂,当然肥皂的主人就难免有怨恨之情,于是,也就不再购买肥皂了。结果,我们寝室就没有肥皂了,而且也没人再提“肥皂”二字。有的甚至就使用别的寝室的肥皂了。)
就表达而言,以上文字几乎无懈可击。但是,我仍然请同学加以修改。且跟学生言明:不改则已,改就要改出英语味道,改出幽默意趣。
顿时,教室鸦雀无声。24双眼睛顿时迸射出苦思与豁然、无奈与兴奋。我稍作启发,便有10多个同学先后起立,最后,上段得到了如下改进:

would forget to buy soap. As a result, ours turned out to be a
soapless room and the word ‘soap’ itself became a taboo. Some
quicker-witted would not shut their eyes to the soap in the next
door.
同样的意思,不同的表达,不同的效果!
经过我的进一步归类分析和推演(infer and
deduct),同学们频频点头。
下课铃声响了。我宣布下课,整个教室再次响起掌声。
人,无论老小,皆渴望鼓励。47岁的我,也不例外。一生,闻掌声多矣,然这次掌声,对我来说,意义不凡。心头阴霾为之一扫,眼前所见因此一亮,想到一句英谚:A
good beginning makes a good ending.(善其始者必善其终)。
