杜牧有名诗，题为“清明”：

清明时节雨纷纷，路上行人欲断魂。

借问酒家何处有，牧童遥指杏花村。

清朝才子纪晓岚不服，认为原诗为七言，可改为五言。如：

清明时节雨，行人欲断魂。酒家何处有，遥指杏花村。

简洁与丰腴。语言哲学认为，丰简之美，不可一概而论。 

借问酒家何处有 → 酒家何处有；“借问”二字，绝非冗余，其中所含的那份从容和悠闲，非“简”可得。

牧童遥指杏花村 → “牧童”二字，乃全诗亮点，全诗画境，多系于“牧童”，岂可草草删略？

又有“好事者”用现代汉语改写杜诗，化“简”为“繁”。其中一句是：

“清明时节雨纷纷” → 茸毛般的细雨多像那多情的手 / 给我们的原野换上了嫩绿的新装 / 我的心啊，在清明梦一般的烟雨中荡漾，荡漾！

    纪改《清明》，失之过“简”，像个瘪三，画境打折；今人改写，失之过“繁”，嚼饭与人，味同嚼蜡。 

英译《清明》，手头有六、七种之多。现择其二，作翻译“丰”、“简”之析。

1．In the Rainy Season of Spring

It drizzles endless during the rainy season in spring,

Travelers along the road look gloomy and miserable.

When I ask a shepherd boy where I can find a tavern,

       He points at a distant hamlet nestling amidst apricot blossoms.

 小析：杜诗的核心，在其标题“清明”二字。此处的“清明”，绝非指“Season of Spring”，而具有特定的文化指向 – 清明节。杨戴两位名家将“清明”翻译成Rainy Season of Spring，处置过简！此“简”，就令Travelers along the road look gloomy and miserable一句令人费解。   

当然，名家毕竟是名家，He points at a distant hamlet nestling amidst apricot blossoms一句中的nestling让人玩味再三！

2．The Tomb-Visiting Day

The ceaseless drizzle drips all the dismal day,

  So broken-hearted fares the traveler on the way.

    When asked where could be found a tavern bower,

        A cowboy points to yonder village of the apricot flower.

小析：此译把“清明”作“过细”处理，译成了Tomb-Visiting Day（直译“走访坟墓的日子”），以上两译，相映成趣，皆有不当。前者，因简化而缺失了文化，后者，因繁琐而缩小了文化！

此译尚有几处可商榷之处。如：“断魂”译成了broken-hearted，也过于具化，意境受损；“酒家”译成a tavern bower，其中的bower（“凉亭”的意思）繁琐而成“蛇足”， “杏花”岂能译成apricot flower？blossom乃“花”，指结果实之花也。

笔者试译：

Ching Ming Festival 

                          – A Day Mourning the Dead

It drizzles ceaselessly at Ching Ming Festival,

     Tomb-visitors along the road look gloomy and miserable.

  When I ask a cowherd boy where I can find a tavern,

         He points at a distant hamlet nestling amidst apricot blossoms.

说明：2008年开始，清明节被定为“国假”，因此，更有理由将“清明节”译成Ching Ming Festival，再辅以小标题 – A Day Mourning the Dead。译者其实肩负着一种责任，一种介绍中国文化的责任。国与国之间的文化交流应该是对等的，西方的Allhallowmas / Hallowmas（俗称“鬼节”不是被译成了汉语的“万圣节”了吗？
