1、情景幽默（humor derived from situation）

    这种幽默往往通过所叙事件或故事本身所具有的可笑性加以实现，而叙事的语言均为寻常字句。一为学生叙写了她的一位室友如此“秉烛夜读”的趣句。

    A very diligent girl in my dorm used to continue her reading in the candle light after the electricity was cut off at 11: 00 PM. Faint as the candle light was, it still prevented me from having a sound sleep. One night I suddenly smelt a strange smell as if something were burning in the room. I opened my eyes wide and saw a terrible scene: My roommate was dozing off, with a book in hand, and some pages of the book had caught the candle fire. I shrieked with terror and rushed forward to put out the fire with my pillow. The fire was extinguished and she was brought into reality. “Are you mad? Why do you beat me so hard?” she shouted at me. “Who on earth is mad, you and I?” I shouted back.

    这段习作也许只是实录了一段真实的经历，那位“秉烛夜读”者醒来的第一句话 “Are you mad ?…”令读者可笑，原因不在其表达本身有何特殊之处，而在其特定的语境之中。制造“火情”者反骂灭火者mad，于是笑料从中抖出。

    2、语言幽默（humor derived from language）

    以下一段习作内容与上段有异曲同工之秒，写得也是一桩“寝室火情”，然而读者从中体味到的幽默并非事件本身，事件本身笔者一笔代过，笔者的主要功力倾注于语言表达之上。幽默，即由此生出。试读：

    One girl in my dorm was in the habit of deep-night reading. Our effort of talking her out of the habit always ended fruitless. She even declared one day that candle light and book are two best friends of hers and that reading in the candle light is a kind of romantic experience, especially when you’re reading something romantic. We have no way out but to put up with her. One night, we were abruptly wakened by her shriek, only to find one of her delicate arms got burnt. How could it be? She explained she had lost her consciousness in the middle of her candle light reading. Her remarks made all of us wide awake. “Your friends are not so friendly to you.” one said. We laughed. “Reading in the candle light is a kind of danger!” the other added. Another louder laughter rose, for we knew that that night she was reading “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell.
