 Happy   Harvest

July 7th is the start of our summer holiday. It is always a happy period of time for us. During the summer holiday, we can relax ourselves and have some fun.

Last week, a colleague of my mother’s, Mr. Liang, invited us, along with several other employees and their offspring, to visit his countryside villa in Jiufo.

It was a bright sunny day. I watched with interest as the city gave way to rolling green hills and fields. We finally stopped at a pretty three-story house, with white walls and a red tiled roof, just like all the other houses around it.

After Mr. Liang unlocked the heavy gates, about a dozen excited people, adults and children,  rushed into the garden. The quiet place suddenly burst alive with flashing figures and buzzing voices.

There were many fruit trees in the garden which drew our attention in an instant. We looked around, eyeing the lovely fruit on the branches avidly.

Better said than done. The garden was immediately under assault.

The longyan trees not far from the entrance were attacked first. We plucked all the large, ripe fruit mercilessly and ate them with relish.

Then, we wandered to the back of the house. There, standing along the path, were several mango trees, bearing large, green fruit. There was a sweet, tempting  scent in the air, and the mangoes seemed to be smiling at us eagerly, saying, ‘Come and pick us! Come and pick us!’ Several younger children were already too impatient to wait.

‘Go and pick the mangoes, everybody.’ Mr. Liang said from a window. ‘Although they appear unripe, they will be edible if you tuck them away for a few days.’ As he said this, he handed around plastic bags for us to put fruit inside. Top-class service!

On hearing his words, everybody set to work, snatching away every mango that we could reach. One by one, the green mangoes were thrown into various plastic bags at a tremendous speed while numerous small white butterflies fluttered out of the clusters of leaves, darting here and there, scared by our sudden, violent moves. However, we were not satisfied with the mangoes hanging on the lower branches. There were bigger ones dangling out of our reach on some of the higher branches, but how could we pick them off?

Of course, we found a way. In a few minutes, most of the mangoes hidden among the leaves in the upper part of the trees were seized by children lifted by adults high above the head. We even used a ladder to reach those that were too high up. After a thorough raid on the mango trees, we turned to the other kinds of fruit and vegetables.

Our next target was the pumpkins. We invaded the pumpkin patch and started picking the large, golden pumpkins. The children especially enjoyed this. They danced around proudly, showing off the ‘loot’ in their hands and smiling happily. Some even posed for photographs, holding heavy pumpkins like little heroes. It was so interesting! The patch was filled with ringing laughter. This was indeed a sweet, pleasing harvest!

We would not just leave it there. After a good search, we turned the whole garden over by picking several towel gourds and cutting down some bamboos. Finally, we climbed to the balcony on the third floor, and were amazed to find that the roof was actually an unsheltered platform. Several other children and I ascended the iron ladder to the platform eagerly. We gasped and held our breath, fascinated by the wonderful view it rendered. The hills rose gracefully in a distance and a row of pretty houses stretched along the road. It was a magnificent point for astronomical observations, I thought.

We were unwilling to leave at the end of this trip. Everybody’s eyes shone with success as we drove back to Guangzhou. We all hoped that someday, we could return to this pretty little villa and start the looting again!
