《My first day at the radio
station》

My
First Day at the Radio Station
I
couldn’t believe it when Jason told me that I had been at last
recruited into the school radio station. I was overjoyed, because
finally, I could broadcast English programs myself in the second
term of my 7th year!
The radio
station was small but very comfortable, with a working desk covered
with beautiful tablecloth, a few little chairs and stools, several
posters, some photos, several files, sets of dictionaries and of
course, both old and new equipment, including microphones and CD
players. Also, there were pens and written notices too, scattered
on the desk.
On the
2nd Friday of the second term, I entered the studio and started my
first ‘workday’. It was 12:25 at noon. Many students were rushing
to the canteen for lunch after a busy, tedious morning, while a lot
of others would stay in the classrooms to enjoy their meal while
listening to the wonderful music on air. I hoped that I could bring
them joy and leisure with my voice.
I seated
myself at the desk, turned the microphone toward myself and took
the disc out. I waited for the heading to be broadcast, chose a
soothing piece of music and spoke into the microphone ‘Hello
everybody. Welcome to Channel 5. I’m Helen from A1, a new
member……’
Our
program is an all-English entertainment program, focusing mainly on
singers, albums and songs, but we also have fun, casual free talks.
The atmosphere is always light and cheerful.
All the
other members of Channel 5 were present, eating or chatting or
making notes. We have established friendly bonds among the 5 of
us, 3 girls and 2 boys.
The
singer I would introduce this time was Celine Dion. I started to
tell her rags-to-riches story which began in a small
French-Canadian town. I played music and songs at intervals,
enjoying the music wafting out of the loudspeaker and echoing in
the school.
Apart from broadcasting,
life at the radio station was enjoyable. We had visitors every now
and then. Some brought notices and advertisements, some came in to
inspect our work and some took with them our lunch, stealing a
glimpse at the workspace in the meantime, while others simply
dropped in for a look and a chat. We knew that every crisp knock on
the door could bring us new ‘surprises’.
My first
day at the radio station meant that I had been accepted by
everybody there. I would love my new family, and I would surely do
my job well!
