Hi XXX,you know I am taking interfaith dialogue this semester
(it's the class which goes to Israel).... so I start learning about
Christianity, Islam and Jewdiasm. Then a strange question poped up
in my mind: :if God creates the universe, who creates God? Does
that mean God creates itself?
Do you have any thoughts on this??
the first anwser that comes to my mind is, well, the people,
they needed something to believe in... or we all live in a dream,
or...
ahah have a nice day!
That’s actually one of the major questions skeptics ask.. You
can argue that God has no beginning or ending (he is not limited in
time because before he created the universe there wasn’t even a
notion of time, God created time and thus created limitedness.
Hence the universe has a beginning and ending, but God hasn’t) And
thus, if God doesn’t have a beginning and ending, there was no
creation necessary, so nobody needed to create god in order to
exist. We are living in his world (the universe), but he doesn’t,
he lives somewhere beyond where there is no time limitation and
thus no beginnings and ends…
Does that make a little bit sense? ;)
This question often pops up in mind even to newly born
Christians. It poped into my mind when i was a teenager. But as i
grew up in the Christian faith, i came to distinguish the Universe
from God. From the bible, it is revealed that GOD created the
Universe. None created Him because he was the universe at the same
time. He existed, exits and will exist forever. He is everything and
everywhere. Look at John, Chapter1:1-28 if you have a christian
bible.
In conclusion, christians believe more in than they question God.
But it takes time to believe. I will be happy to answer whatever
concern you may have or refer you to more experienced persons when
i can't.
Have a good day.
You're question is not an easy one. There are many answers for sure, differing between religions and times in History.
In the Greek tradition of Philosophy, up until the Philosophers
of Europe, God was described or even defined, as the prime reason,
the reason of reasons. This is how his existence is proved,
according to them: there must be a first reason to all that there
is, and if it has a reason so this one would be the first. This
reason is the reason of itself, it creates itself, and this is
God.
Some would say that God is above "reason and outcome" or time and
space. That is another solution. looking for reasons in time is
human, and God is outside of this, bigger than this. He is infinite
also in this aspect, not limited by attributes of human logic or
perception.
But, then again, some people would see this as a flaw in the
theory. Richard Dawkins, for instance, a big promoter of Atheist
views nowadays, claims that this solution of God being the prime
reason is not solving anything. Just like you said. Saying that the
world just exists without any reason, and saying that it was
created by god who exists by himself with no reason - these two are
quite the same. The question why remains unanswered. we always get
to a dead end, where we have to say "this is unexplainable". This
is one of his points against religion and the existence of
God.
I guess many words were written about this subject along history.
you can probably find many different views and answers to this
question.
