读赵越胜《燃灯者----忆周辅成》。经周老的指点，我了解到法国的人文学者，拉波哀西（Étienne de La Boétie，1530——1563）。

周老推荐读拉波哀西的《自愿奴役论》，说，托尔斯泰是流着泪读这篇文章的。

我于是去读了一点英译本，discourse on voluntary obedience，读得悚然。

I should like merely to understand how it happens that so many men, so many villages, so many cities,so many nations, sometimes suffer under a single tyrant who has no other power than the power they give him; who is able to harm them only to the extent to which they have the willingness to bear with him; who could do them absolutely no injury unless they preferred to put up with him rather than contradict him. Surely a striking situation!

大致意思是，为什么那么多的人，拱手送给暴君权力，甘愿忍受，并臣服于暴政之下。

拉波哀西说，“是你们自己，使暴君变成这样强大。为了造就他的伟大，你们不惜牺牲生命。他唯一的优势，是你们给予他生杀予夺的特权。只要不再供他驱使，你们就自由了。。。只要不支持他，他将会象从下面抽掉了基础的庞然大物一样，由于自身重力塌陷下来，就会被砸得粉碎”。

可惜的是，大多数人奄奄待毙，感觉不到苦痛。

因为，拉波哀西说，“人们最初是受迫才供人驱使的。但是他们的下一代就再也看不见自由，他们已经无所遗憾地供人驱使了。他们自愿地完成着他们的前辈只是由于强迫才去做的工作。所以，生于羁绁，长为奴隶的人，都把他们出生的环境，当作自然状态。”

这是在说我们么？这500年前的话？
