我猜，狄更斯在写英国史时，心有余恨，总觉得施展不开。昏庸残暴的国君走马灯一般，乏善可陈。时不时，狄更斯走了神，笔下一时没收住，历史就变成了小说。

在叙述理查德一世（1157--1199）的最终结局时，狄更斯再次技痒。

理查德一世中箭伤重，自知不治，亲自讯问敌方射手。驰骋疆场的国王，气息奄奄，躺在病榻上；那年轻人被押了上来，四目相对。狄更斯实在按捺不住，开始写小说了，

King Richard looked at him steadily.He looked, as steadily, at the King。

接着，狄更斯的人物对白，颇有莎士比亚之风。

" Knave!" said King Richard."What have I done to thee that thou shouldest take my life?"

"What hast thou done to me?"replied the young man."with thine own hands thou hast killed my father and my two brothers.Myself thou wouldest have hanged. let me die now, by any torture that thou wilt. My comfort is, that no torture can save thee. Thou too must die;and through me, the world is quit of thee!"

小说笔法又来了，“Again the King looked at the young man steadily.Again the young man looked at steadily at him。

理查德一世自己，一向身先士卒，作战勇猛。见到这个视死如归的对手，惺惺相惜。他说，“Youth! I forgive thee!go unhurt!

临死之前，理查德一世命令手下，当场释放这位弓箭手。本可成为武士间千古绝唱的，可惜国王的侍卫没历史感，不懂配合，没有执行国王最后的命令，却将射手乱刀砍死。

哭笑不得。英国的早期历史，就是这样不堪。若不是狄更斯的文字，实在读不下去。
