超一流的丹尼斯（Claire Danes）

Capital Danes

There’s something about the way that Claire Danes both looks and moves that makes you instinctively look down at her feet to check that they’re touching the floor. As she walks into a London restaurant, a frail-looking, narrow-shouldered woman of 28, with wispy fair hair and porcelain-pale skin, she seems to almost glide. But there’s nothing watery about the eyes with their steady hazel gaze, nor about the confident “Hey!” with which she greets a large, hairy man who is ambling past our table (he turns out to be Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters). Nor indeed about her nose.

Critics have tend to work themselves into quite a lather about Claire Danes”s nose. It is not particularly large, and it’s not at all misshapen, but it’s what gives her face its character and mystery. Across its bridge a little battle is being fought which appears to be pulling her in two different directions at once: one of them fey, the other earthy. As an actress this makes her an intriguing proposition- so much so that there is even a song by the Lesser Birds of Paradise called

Claire Danes, If You Ever Get a Nose Job, I Swear to Jesus I’ll Hang Myself.

 

It comes as no great surprise to find her cast as a star who has fallen to earth in her new film, Stardust. Danes plays the celestial Yvaine, who leaves her starry home and discovers the enriching power of love. If all this sounds like a big bucket of whimsy, I should point out that the film-based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a witch and Robert De Niro as a cross-dressing lightening catcher-is very funny and directed with great panache by Matthew Vaughn. Danes is also currently starring in Evening, a film based on Susan Minot’s novel, in which she plays the younger self of Vanessa Redgrave’s character.
