-ing participle includes both traditional”present participle” and the “gerund”. Prensent participle can be used as subject, object, adverbial etc. except predicate. But gerund can’t be used as adverbial. Gerund can be used as attribute, and it usually used to describe the effect,function,use etc. And there are many verbs followed by infinitive or by –ing participle that we should learn by heart.
