塞外寻古：2013天津大学—香港大学暑期建筑研习营_朱涛TaoZhu

Participants
28 students of the Department of Architecture, HKU led by Prof. Tao Zhu and Prof. Weijen Wang;
40 students/ teachers of the Tianjin University, Tongji University, Southeast University, Chongqing University, South China University of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University.

Program

1. Visit and study a group of Chinese classical structures in Hebei （河北）and Liaoning (遼寧), including The Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples in Chengde（承德避暑山莊和外八廟）, the Ten Thousands Buddha Monastery Grottoes and Fengguo Temple in Yi County (義縣萬佛堂石窟和奉國寺), and Great Wall at Shanhaiguan Pass (長城山海關).

2. Visit the School of Architecture, Tianjin University and Tianjin City.
(All tours guided by the teachers of Tianjin University will be conducted in Putonghua.)

3. All Students are required to make study reports, to join the exhibition and review at Tianjin University at the end of program. HKU students are also required to hold an exhibition to share their learning experience with other students in the coming fall semester at the Department of Architecture, HKU.

Fees
Each HKU student will be responsible for his/her own round-trip flight tickets between Hong Kong- Tianjin. Tianjin University will cover all participants' lodging, food, transportation, site-seeing entry fees during the field trip in Hebei, Liaoning and Tianjin.

Registration
The program is open to all fulltime students registered in BAAS, MArch, MLA, MSc in Conservation, MPhil and PhD programs in the Department of Architecture, as well as students interested in history of Chinese architecture from HKU. Interested applicants please send a one-page CV to Ms. Esther Siu (esthers@hku.hk) at the Department of Architecture before May 31st.

This field study will organize students to explore the rich architectural heritage in the northeast area of Hebei （河北）and Liaoning (遼寧) beyond the Great Wall. Students will visit an extraordinary set of classical structures including:

- The Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples in Chengde, Hebei（河北承德避暑山莊和外八廟） - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its vast and rich collection of Chinese landscapes and buildings considered as a culmination of all the variety of gardens, pagodas, temples and palaces from various regions of China;

- The Ten Thousands Buddha Monastery Grottoes - the biggest and oldest grottoes in northeast China, and Fengguo Temple, a Liao Dynasty temple famous for its Grand Hall hosting seven giant Buddha statues that was featured in Wong Kar-wai recent film The Grandmaster （一代宗師）, both in Yi County, Liaoning (遼寧義縣萬佛堂石窟和奉國寺);

- Shanhaiguan Pass (長城山海關), featuring the eastern end of the main line of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and acclaimed as the "First Pass Under Heaven", in Qinhuangdao, Hebei（河北秦皇島）.

This program will be an invaluable lesson for students to gain firsthand knowledge and insight about Chinese classical architecture.
