Tracing the
Classics:
During the 1930s, Chinese scholars Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, along with several colleagues from the Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture, conducted a series of field trips to identify and examine historically significant structures survived in the Chinese countryside. Their discoveries were numerous and astonishing, among which the greatest triumph was the identification of the Foguang Temple, a timber structure dating back to 857 A. D. in the Wutai Mountains, Shanxi Province. Based on these painstaking field studies, in the early 1940s Liang wrote two survey books that for the first time systematically mapped out the evolution of Chinese classical architecture.
With the theme "Tracing the Classics," the Summer 2011 Tianjin University – University of Hong Kong Architectural Field Study will organize students to re-take part of Liang and Lin's journeys: to travel to northern Shanxi to reexamine a group of survived timber structures that were built before the 12th Century and discovered by Liang, Lin and their colleagues in the 1930s. This program will be an invaluable lesson for students to gain firsthand knowledge and insight about Chinese classical architecture.
