Dear Cherry,
This is the last of my initial 4 reviews of resorts and restaurants in Sanya, and it has been a lot of fun. I conclude this series with my thoughts and experiences associated with my visit to the fine dining restaurant called Sophia located at the spectacular The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya. Following are a few quotes form the Ritz-Carlton promotional materials, which are relevant to our discussion. “Situated on an exclusive site along Yalong Bay in Hainan Province, The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya enjoys expansive views of the South China Sea. The resort is well appointed with 450 guest rooms, suites and private villas. Extensive recreational facilities include swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness center and a signature Ritz Kids Club. Guests will also be pampered at the largest Ritz-Carlton spa in the region designed by ESPA. Eight restaurants and lounges offer scenic views of the lagoon and the ocean. In addition to flexible space designed for meetings, conferences, and special social events, a wedding chapel - Sanya’s only waterfront wedding chapel - will be the backdrop for intimate ceremonies. The property is designed by WAT&G Design and draws influence and inspiration from the classic building design of Beijing’s Summer Palace, with high-pitched ceilings, dark rich wood, intricate carvings and mosaic detailing, coupled with grand water features and opulent furnishings. Merging seamlessly with this Asian graciousness is a Western modernity, coupled with The Ritz-Carlton’s outstanding level of commitment to service and guest satisfaction. This all adds up to a great sense of place with immaculate detailing and service.” Well stated, and I might add that when approaching the entrance to the resort by car, I was mildly intimidated by the sheer massiveness of this palace like structure as I was welcomed through the gates by the allure of what might be inside. Stepping out of the car at the top of the driveway I was welcomed by the good manners and polite smiles of several staff, so typical of the common Ritz-Carlton experience, but enhanced by the dear good nature and seeming innocence of the nice people from Hainan Province. I did, indeed, feel welcome. As I stepped into the massive open lobby, so beautifully appointed with sculptures and both modern and classic Chinese
