We are in Suzhou, a city best known for its stunning natural beauty. The rippling lake water and clear, blue sky combine to hint a fine and bright day, filling our hearts with joy and elation.

By the picturesque Dushu Lake stands Kempinski Hotel Suzhou, one of the newest additions to Kempinski’s global portfolio. Mr. Reto Wittwer, President and CEO of Kempinski Hotels & Resorts, appeared full of confidence when we met him at the hotel’s opening ceremony. During the interview, the hotelier said, “Guests can enjoy an unobstructed view from each of our 458 spacious and tastefully appointed rooms and suites. The Executive Floor and suites offer a variety of tailor-made services to corporate executives and other high ranking business travelers. In addition to business dinners, we’re also ideal for your planning wedding banquet or meeting friends. We like China, and hope to do our best here.”

Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group, Kempinski Hotels was founded in Germany in 1897. The leader in the global hospitality industry celebrates a history of 111 years. Kempinski’s impressive portfolio of distinctive properties includes historical landmarks, unique hide-away resorts and vibrant city hotels throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America and Asia. Rich in tradition, each Kempinski hotel embraces the local culture and customs of its destination whilst maintaining the impeccable personalized service for which Kempinski is renowned. Put simply, they are the first choice for the discerning luxury traveler.

When being asked of Kempinski’s pioneering entry into and expansion in the Chinese market, the Chief Executive Officer, who is very approachable, replied, “China is simply on a different scale to other countries. Not only is it very attractive for business and investment, but China’s also gearing up for tourism in a big way, especially with the 2008 Olympics being held in Beijing. Our aim is to increase our share of the national travel market in both the business and leisure segments.” His pride and confidence in the prospects of Kempinski Suzhou cannot be more apparent when Mr. Wittwer mentioned the above; emphasizing more than once that he was very much interested in China, a market with huge potentials. “We can and will do our best.”

Kempinski was one of the pioneers, entering China in 1992. Kempinski’s excellent brand recognition in China ensures its success with both national and international business and leisure travelers, who identify with the consistently high service and quality standards on offer at Kempinski’s five star luxury hotels. With properties opened in Beijing and Suzhou as well as in other Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Dalian, Wuxi, Sanya, Qingdao, Tianjin and Xi’an, plus the Tangula luxury train which it will manage, Kempinski is already one of the major players in the important Chinese market with an impressive portfolio in key destinations.

Kempinski is an international company, yet has local economic impact through the guests attracted to its hotels, its training and educational efforts for staff, its operations and use of local produce. Commenting on the devastating Sichuan earthquake which arrests the attention of every Chinese, Mr. Wittwer said, “After understanding the conditions from the TV coverage and posts on the BBS, we took appropriate actions, including arranging for donations. We believe that each hotel we manage is part of the society and community of our host countries, and that it is our responsibility to successfully integrate our operations into the life of the local community. This is why hotels in each destination are encouraged to choose social responsibility programs that meet the needs of the local community in which they operate.”
Each year, renowned magazines and travel associations select the best hotels of the world and distinguish them with awards for excellence in areas such as hospitality, gastronomy as well as spa & wellness. Kempinski Hotels is proud to be the recipient of many of these exclusive awards. Kempinski is a member of the Global Hotel Alliance. Each Kempinski hotel is a distinctive property, with its own character and charm, whilst revealing the character of the country in which its guests are staying, while they enjoy the impeccable personal service and superlative facilities for which Kempinski is acclaimed. With an insightful, forward-looking and innovation-consicous leader like Reto Wittwer, Kempinski is sure to reap bigger success in China, bringing more fresh sensations to the historic country where classicism meets fashion.
