A Talk with Bernard Teo, Area
General Manager - Hainan of Gloria Hotels &
Resorts
Hainan is a tropic island
paradise and Sanya is its ultimate playground. With miles and miles
of pristine beaches, this is heaven indeed for intrepid travelers
and sun worshippers alike. With its rustic charm still very much
intact, tourists can experience the culturally rich traditions of
minority tribes.
Gloria Resort Sanya opened its
doors in 1996. As the country’s first 5-star beachfront resort, it
is nestled away in the cozy Yalong Bay—just like a gem encased in
a jade belt—where guests can relax in a world of their own or
visit various popular tourist attractions located only minutes
away, enjoying the undisturbed beauty of deep ocean, azure sky and
white sand beaches. The hotel offers 404 well-appointed rooms and
suites, a grand Ballroom and 5 natural-lit multi-purpose meeting
and function rooms. If you look out of the window, swimming pools
are right before the eye; deep South China Sea can be seen at a
distance. The hotel offers a lot more. Green area is vast and can
be used to host outdoor dinner parties at one starry night. A
professional training field is available for team-building
activities. Hotel amenities include 3 outdoor swimming pools
varying in size and shape, an indoor Health Club, 4 floodlit tennis
courts, an archery range and a variety of beach & water sports,
as well as an 18-hole golf court which is but two minutes away by
walk.
Our interviewee is Bernard Teo,
the man behind Gloria Resort Sanya. Starting his hospitality career
in 1992, the ex-Singapore Air Force serviceman now has 15 years’
experience gained around the globe, in various properties ranging
from resort to business hotel. In 2005, Bernard Teo was first
appointed Resident Manager of Gloria Resort Sanya, and soon
promoted to the GM post five months later. Different experiences in
renovation, re-branding and marketing have sharpened his eye and
head as well as diversified his professional expertise. Bernard Teo
himself is expert in sales and marketing. What has he done to make
Gloria Resort Sanya unique? Let’s listen to the GM’s kind
sharing.
: Mr. Teo, you have such a
rich experience in managing luxury hotels around the world, how do
you like the job in Gloria Resort Sanya?
Bernard Teo: I am enjoying
every single moment of it so far. Since my arrival, I have been
fortunate enough to work with a cohesive team of professionals at
the hotel and Corporate Office.
: The market is getting
crowded in Sanya and Hainan. How are you making your hotel stand
out from the crowd?
Bernard Teo: Each hotel has its
own uniqueness in its “Selling Point”. At the Gloria Resort
Sanya, being a flagship resort in the Gloria International Hotels
arm, has an existing “niche” appealing to our customers. Apart
from constantly upgrading our facilities and services to remain a
dominant hotel in Sanya and China, we distinguish ourselves
prominently from the newly opened as well as soon to open
international brand hotels immensely just by our STAFF. Our STAFF,
are our people, and our people will be the prized indulgence in all
of our focus, time, development and investment. We have a unique
code of service conduct herein and this is done simply, the Gloria
Way:
In our resort, we do not
indulge in fancy decorum or expensive artifacts. Simply, it is a
resort and we merely enforce on this with several notable distinct
differences that is uniquely, Gloria. It has the most generous
pools and sparse botanical gardens in Yalong Bay. It ready access
to the beach filled with the finest sands and hosts a complete
array of Sea Sports activities. Its unique Spa Garden with five
spacious and exclusive Thai styled villa huts, has a full frontal
ocean view. It professional native Thai therapists will offer the
most exquisite experience. Its meeting rooms have a natural
daylight capability and a panoramic view of the pool and South
China Sea.
We have the only
Presidential Villa with a private swimming pool and beach access.
Its exclusive gardens could hosts exclusive outdoor BBQ parties
complete with fireworks display.
: Who are your target
clients for Gloria Resort Sanya?
Bernard Teo: Guests looking for
suitable and comfortable accommodation without being overbearing in
our outlook. In simplicity, we are just a good resort hotel that
provides a safe haven to both the FIT(Free & Easy Travelers),
Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition and leisure
travelers both domestic and international.
: When you relax in
Sanya, what do you enjoy doing with your
time?
Bernard Teo: I relax all the
time – in and out of work. The idyllic environment of the hotel is
most conducive with its luscious gardens and vastness of our ocean
view. My wife and I share the best of our times in the hotel
itself.
: With two decades of
significant experience in the hotel industry, what is your plan to
lift up Gloria Resort Sanya to a new level?
Bernard Teo: Constantly
updating our hardware (product) and our software (staff) to keep
abreast with the ever changing customer demands and expectations.
Most guests are well traveled and have an enormous choice of
service providers to choose from.
Gloria Resort has already
established itself at an acceptable and renowned level in Sanya
being China’s first 5-star Resort hotel and my team and I will
work towards maintaining that stature. It has won many domestic and
international accolades not only in the past but at present. This
only amplifies our well-being here.
: You have worked in
South East Asia, Beihai and Harbin before you joined Gloria Hotel
group. Where do you enjoy most and why?
Bernard Teo: At the various
destinations, they have their own challenges and goals. But I guess
as a whole, I enjoy China most. Watching where its come from to
what it has developed to today. Best of all, it is still developing
and there’s much work to be done in the hospitality
sector.
: How to you feel about
the development in Sanya and do you feel in the infrastructure is
in place to cope with its travel market?
Bernard Teo: Sanya have still a
long way to go before launching and realizing itself as a top-notch
destination.
Some of the inevitable
developments that we would like to see would be:
s
Upgrading of Phoenix International Airport’s installation and
visitors’ arrival and departure services
s
Public Transportation including road worthiness of
vehicles
s
Efficient and professional travel agencies
s
Aggressive Marketing Campaigns solace for Sanya in the domestic and
international market
s
Travelers’ safe
s
Tourist “Help Disk” in strategic locales in the city
s
Upgraded Health and Medical installations
s
Introduction of International Tourism and Hospitality
Institutions
s
Organized City development, refurbishment and maintenance
plan
s
Hygiene and Sanitation
s
Upgraded Road Network System
s
Recognition and support from major statutory
organizations
s
More seamless communication platform with major governmental office
holders
s
Attract more domestic and foreign investments here to spruce up the
tourism belt. At the moment, the un-balanced focus is placed in
hotel investment where theme parks and tasteful night entertainment
is lacking.
: How do you feel Sanya
compares to other resort areas in Southeast Asia and what do you
feel are its competitive advantages?
Bernard Teo: Sanya is still
maturing as a destination itself whilst the rest of Southeast Asia
have long reaped its bounty in its appeal to the leisure market.
Its like the Phuket or Bali in the early 1970s with its natural
flora and fauna and miles of pristine beaches. We have the
advantage of learning from these matured destinations and providing
a different essence in our overall well-being to be just as
successful if not, better. Its geographical advantage will leave
the rest of the other destinations aloof.
: What do you feel
would be a good addition to Sanya to help develop the
market?
Bernard Teo: The establishment
of a highly professional advisory committee empowered to assist the
local government bodies with the development of Sanya with a
renewed focus. It has stagnated with only lateral uncoordinated
developments.
: What are the biggest
achievement and challenge for you during these 1.5 years as the GM
of Gloria Resort Sanya?
Bernard Teo: For the hotel,
sustainable growth and career for our people. For the owners,
profitable growth. For me personally, facing the numerous
challenges to bring it to what it has become today – a significant
business unit.
: Any plans for the
hotel in year 2007 that you would like to share with
us?
Bernard Teo: In essence, my
personal goals would be in line with what I have planned for the
hotel’s work plan for 2007 encompassing the essential
following:
s
Together with the Corporate office at the Gloria International
Hotels, streamline out internal processes. As hotels establish
themselves concurrent to globalization, they often map out
processes that may not necessarily be customer friendly. Our aim
would be make our processed customer and staff friendly yet
striking a balance with efficiency.
s
With the influx of the fast growing international travelers, there
is much to be done. We will gear ourselves towards receiving well
the diversified magnitude of guests so as to meet well with their
expectations.
s
Launching Gloria Resort Sanya in the international arena. As we
welcome more international travelers at the hotel and this is shown
in the change in our guest mix, we are constantly “tweeking” our
facilities and services so as to accede to their
expectations.
s
For our staff, we will invest on service and skills
enhancement.
Our interview is coming to an
end, and we couldn’t help but admiring Bernard Teo’s sharp
insight and his ability in coping with the market. You’re always
welcome to Gloria Resort Sanya and relish in comfort the hotel’s
nice setting, comprehensive facilities and good quality
service.
