Dear Professors & Alumni, Dear Students:

It is a great honor for me to be here as invited speaker. Nine years before, I was admitted to this prestigious IMBA program as a member of the pilot class just like you here. We had 40 students only.

When I applied for this program, I clearly realized that something special should happen to change my boring life. I was 30 and had 7 years work experiences in broadcasting industry. There was no international MBA program while I applied, so it was not my first choice actually, but when the school selected us to a special program named Tsinghua SEM-MIT Sloan Joint Education Program, I knew I was doing the right thing.

Two years on campus is the most luxury thing in my life, I should admit that it was really happy time! We were making progresses everyday, while my view to the world changed under the western business training. We become proactive, systematic and confident. Language is so poor to describe all the changes happened on all of us, and no words can describe our appreciation for this program, for our professors and faculty.

It was the first time to most of us to carefully & systematically think about our career path. I realized that I should stick to that broadcast industry, which can best combine my former experiences and future growth. That proved to be very successful in the coming days. Long experiences in a industry can build your credibility and relationship network. You will have much better understanding for these rules behind.

Since general management was my great interest, the courses like Leadership and Communication became my favorites. I choose sales & marketing position after graduation as the base for my career. The job that directly makes money is always critical for a business, and will help you to open the door for higher position. I believe in this.

Continuous learning is another merit we should always keep in mind. It is hard to have regular time for learning while you are working in a business, but we still can do it in variant ways. Reading books, no matter they are managerial of historic, observing the way your boss handling people and overcome difficulties, if you can have a mentor, that should be much greater, learning from your peers’ success and failure, all of them can help you to climb high on your career latter. If you are seen as an expert in particular area, your road will be greatly broadened.

You might know that I had experiences in both multinational companies & SOEs. It is very important to be flexible in fitting the culture, while keeping the target deep in mind without any compromising. People are smart enough to develop the best way suitable to the environment. If you decide that things are intolerable after careful considerations, find your next job on the bases of your interests, capabilities and payment. Job change is a big thing, but not so big that deserve your happiness.

Philosophical thinking is important for our happiness. Everybody is unique, but social acceptance is more important for business graduates. Making money is first priority for most of us but ethical problem will kill you if you forget it. It is painful for some of us to be subordinates of a stupid boss, but you should know that it is your best time to show your outstanding intelligence. Career is someone’s all life, please never forget your health and family can create and re-energize a better one for you.

I believe that every decision you make will have some words in you resume, we are writing resume with everyday actions. To be enrolled as a member of this famous program will add an impressive line in your resume, but everyone here should prepare well for your next line. People are expecting you to show something special. Your classmates, your professors, textbooks and cases, Internet and internship, club and interests group, there are enormous sources for learning.

It is so good to have two years time on this beautiful campus. You have enough time to cure you hurts, meet interesting people, re-think your future road, study your favorite courses, energize for great expectation. So enjoy that! No matter what  ambition or plan you have today, you will get it soon! That is my best wish!
