The telecoms giant better known for providing phones and connections is to become a fully-fledged internet retailer after its acquisition of Dabs.com, the online electrical and technical goods provider.

The acquisition, for 30 million, will enable the former monopoly to sell digital cameras, Sony PlayStations and even motorised skateboards alongside its traditional products.

The tie-up with Dabs, which processes about 75,000 customer orders each month, would allow BT to cross-sell its products to consumers, he said. A consumer buying a PC on the Dabs site, for example, would be offered BT broadband.

 

 

    上个月，BT（英国电信）收购了网上购物公司Dab.com，从而也可以向用户提供网上购物的服务，这是电信运营商向综合信息服务提供商转型的典型案例。如文中所说，当用户通过Dab.com购买了一台PC时，BT可以同时向他/她提供宽带接入服务，这就是“一站式服务”。对于中小企业而言，网上购物加电信运营也可以为用户提供整套IT加电信业务解决方案，这对于IT管理人员缺乏的中小企业是非常便利的。

    中国的电信运营商也在加快转型的步伐，例如面向企业客户的综合解决方案、号码百事通等综合业务的提供，以丰富自己的综合信息服务能力。然而，目前中国主导的电信运营商机构庞大，经营思路单一，这些因素一定程度上制约了一些开创性合作的实施。在此，笔者认为电信运营商应充分发挥自己的产业链的主导地位，开放地、创造性地谋求多方面的合作，强调互惠互利而不是“大小通吃”，激发内容提供者、系统集成商等（潜在）合作伙伴的积极性，共同繁荣信息产业。
