One who is eager to outdo others is attaching to results, 

refusing to admit defeat, unwilling to be looked down upon, 

pursuing perfection in whatever he does and continuously justifying himself. 

All those are the causes of suffering. 

The original meaning of cultivation is to have us break through the constraint of self attachment and step into a completely new world of life.
