Faculty Lecturer in Chinese
The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the
University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Faculty
Lecturer position in Chinese language teaching. This is a renewable
five-year, twelve months per year academic appointment. Applicants
for this position should have a PhD or equivalent degree (or be
close to completion) in Chinese language pedagogy, Chinese
linguistics, second language acquisition, or related fields, and
proficiency in Chinese and English. The successful candidate will
have substantial relevant teaching experience and present clear
evidence of superior teaching ability. Experience in program
coordination and computer-assisted instruction will be assets.
Faculty Lecturers will teach eight half course equivalents (HCE)
per year and assume normal administrative duties associated with
teaching. There is no research expectation associated with this
position, although Faculty Lecturers are expected to remain current
with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their
teaching assignments.
Courses on East Asia have been offered regularly at the University
of Alberta since 1961, making our program one of the oldest in
Western Canada. Originally founded in 1979, the Department of East
Asian Studies has eleven faculty members in Chinese and Japanese
studies and is undergoing a significant rebuilding process. For

Established in 1908 as a board-governed, public institution, the
University of Alberta has earned the reputation of being one of the

province of Alberta. The Edmonton metropolitan area is the sixth
largest in the country with a population of approximately one

drive from Banff and Jasper National Parks, which offer skiing in
winter and excellent hiking and sightseeing in summer.
Salary for this Faculty Lecturer position is on the Assistant
Professor scale, which begins at $64,087 per annum (2008-09 scale),
and the position includes a full range of benefits. Consideration
of applications will begin on October 31, 2008, and continue until
the position is filled. The effective date of employment is July 1,
2009.
