Visiting Instructor of Chinese
Position Description

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Notre Dame, invites applications for a one-year, potentially renewable, visiting instructor of Chinese for the 2007-08 academic year. The successful candidate must: hold at least an MA in pedagogy, linguistics, or second language acquisition, or other relevant discipline, have university-level experience teaching Chinese using communicative, proficiency-based methodology, and have native or “near-native” fluency in both Chinese and English. A commitment to excellence in undergraduate education in Chinese language is expected. Experience in computer assisted language teaching is a plus. Principal instructional duties will be the teaching of first and second year Chinese courses. Send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a representative sample of teaching uations, two letters of reference, and a video (either tape or DVD) of a teaching demonstration to Joan Rhoads, Administrative Assistant, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, 205 O’Shaughnessy Hall, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556. If necessary, the University will provide assistance in obtaining the required visa. Review of candidates will begin May 8 and will continue until the position is filled. Kwong Kow Chinese School (KKCS) in Boston, Massachusetts

School Head sought for the new Kwong Kow Chinese School in Boston, MA. Founded in 1916, KKCS provides quality out-of-school Chinese language and cultural education, academic support, and recreational programs for more than 700 children of low to moderate income families from kindergarten through ninth grade. KKCS's first permanent building being built at 87 Tyler Street, Boston is scheduled for completion by the end of the summer. The current headmistress has deferred her retirement until the new school head is in place.

The ideal candidate for the after-school and weekend school head position will be a high energy educator who is bilingual in English and Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin preferred) with experience in teaching Chinese language and culture to Chinese and non-Chinese learners. This non full-time position will provide ample opportunity for the successful candidate to demonstrate his/her leadership ability to bring the school, together with its staff and student body, to the next level of excellence. Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

Language Training Specialist: U.S. Department of State, the Foreign Service Institute

Would you like to use your fluency in another language to help strengthen and improve the United States’ relationship with other countries? Would you like to work with the Foreign Service Officers who represent the United States abroad? Then this may be the job for you!

You will be a Language Training Specialist in the U.S. Department of State, at the Foreign Service Institute.

The Foreign Service Institute is recruiting two Language Training Specialists, one in Mandarin Chinese, and one in Arabic.

In your position as Language Training Specialist you will:

Assist in student development, organization of language training programs, and implementation of program objectives.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • training and development of SLS instructional staff;
  • Tester or Examiner training leading to certification;
  • training in multimedia, distance learning, and emerging language learning technologies;
  • overseeing the developing and updating of curricula and language training materials;
  • providing administrative analysis and assistance to language sections’ program managers;
  • making presentations and briefings; serving as a team leader in school-wide initiatives undertaken to address changes in the topical, skill-area, or uation needs of Foreign Affairs employees in language training.
  • To a limited extent you may engage in classroom language instruction and oral proficiency testing as needs and priorities dictate.

The Foreign Service Institute: The Foreign Service Institute is the Federal Government's primary training institution for officers and support personnel of the U.S. foreign affairs community, preparing American diplomats and other professionals to advance U.S. foreign affairs interests overseas and in Washington.

Requirements: You must be a United States Citizen
Fluency in either Chinese or Arabic and experience teaching that language to adult students in an intensive language training setting (you will be assessed by FSI.)
Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance

Salary: $66,767 to $86,801 (starting salaries vary and may be based in part on superior academic achievement and/or previous work experience).

Location: Arlington, VA.
