1900年，义和团的兴起和八国联军的入侵使古老的中国经历了一个难以令人忘怀的世纪之首，关于那一年的种种，我们可以看到的资料已经很多而无需多加描述。

沃尔特.库尔兹，一位德国牧师叛逆性颇强的儿子，这时候正作为德意志帝国的一名水兵服役，他在他的相册里保存下了一批照片。当几十年后他的孙子不经意的翻开相册时，才发现原来这正包括了1900年八国联军入侵中国和随后岁月里库尔兹在中国服役留下的影象。

这个相册里的很多照片，似乎都没有见于发表，因此，我觉得把它在这里贴出来，也许带有一种历史的见证意义。

也许，它可以让我们回到那个时代，重新感受一个世纪以前那个动荡而古老的中国。

沃尔特.库尔兹 1895-1908年服役于德国皇家海军，可惜他没有留下多少文字，今天人们除了知道他曾经在阿尔萨斯号和卢克斯号军舰服役，参加过美西战争和八国联军入侵北京以外，对他就一无所知了。

战斗中被击毁的清军炮阵地，可见清军的火炮带有在城墙上移动的滑轨，已经比在第二次鸦片战争中的装备好了很多。

北京的城防工事，依然是依托古老的城墙。可惜，这古老的城墙，在解放后被永远的埋葬在二环路这个名词里了，只有德胜门孤独的留在那里。这是哪座城门呢？恕我眼拙。

又是一批被捕获准备杀掉的义和团。我本身对义和团运动的意义评价不高，因为它不但是反对外国人，也反对一切现代文明。但是看到这几条视死如归的汉子，还是不禁为他们的不屈感到深切的震动。

中国官府的惩罚犯人方法 ?C 站笼，摄影者恰好摄下了犯人的名字和罪名，恶棍也算罪名，今天看来让人有些觉得奇怪。

清朝这种站笼的刑法，当犯人无力支撑自己的时候，会因为身体的重量把自己吊死，简直就是一种慢性的死刑。

有风景，有当时的风情，也有。。。血腥的历史。那个时代中国的影像，通过一个德国水兵的眼传达过来，更加复杂万象。
