Foreword
Mr. Martin Gordon has been
involved in the economic cooperation between China and the United
Kingdom since 1985. Since 1996, he has been
involved in anti HIV/AIDS work in China and is an old friend of the
Chinese people.
In the past 20 years or so,
especially since he retired from the banking industry in 2003, Mr.
Martin Gordon has visited China more than 80 times for the cause of
HIV/AIDS prevention and control in China. He has
held training courses in southern, northern and western regions in
China, and has funded many medical staff to go to the United
Kingdom for further studies and has established a bridge of
friendship between China and Britain. He visited and supported many
infectious disease hospitals and social HIV/AIDS prevention and
control organizations and has made outstanding contributions. He
firstly focused his attention on the care of AIDS patients and
people living with HIV and sent genuine care to the bedside of the
patients. He actively implemented the prevention
- based strategy and promoted primary prevention work that combines
public health services with community culture. He continued to
support the grassroots organizations of gay men and women
organizations in carrying out prevention interventions in response
to the key issues.
Another important contribution
by Mr. Martin Gordon is that since 2000, he set up the Barry &
Martin's Prize for people working at the frontline in HIV/AIDS
prevention and control in China. Among the
prizewinners, there are clinical doctors and nurses in many
infectious disease hospitals, prevention specialists and community
representatives. Today, the Barry & Martin's Prize has become
one of the major awards in the Anti HIV/AIDS field in
China.
Since the beginning of the
HIV/AIDS epidemic in China, due to the enormous efforts of the
Chinese government and medical community, the AIDS epidemic has
been contained at a low prevalence level. The epidemic among most
high-risk groups has been curbed. At the same time, Chinese society
has also made great progress in understanding homosexuals. It can
be expected that the HIV/AIDS epidemic among gay men will be curbed
in the near future. In China's progress in the
fight against HIV/AIDS, there have also been achievements made by
Barry & Martin’s Trust.
This year is Mr. Martin
Gordon's 80th birthday year. In his article “For
the Promise of Love”, Professor Zhang Beichuan, an expert in
HIV/AIDS prevention and control among homosexuals in China, has
given a fuller description of the life of Mr. Martin Gordon as a
well-known British-Chinese friend. Together with
Mr. Martin Gordon, he invited me to write a foreword for this
article. I would like to use this article as a congratulatory
message to Mr. Martin Gordon and wish him a healthy and prosperous
life and hope he makes even more and even greater contributions to
the anti-HIV/AIDS cause in China.
