Capital: Annapolis
Population: More than 5,600,000 live in Maryland.
Geography: Close to Belgium in size, Maryland is the 9th smallest state with less than 13,000 square kilometers of area. Maryland is bordered in the north by Pennsylvania; in the west by West Virginia; in the east by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean; and in the south, across the Potomac River, by West Virginia and Virginia. Because of its diverse landscapes, Maryland is often referred to as “America in Miniature.”
Higher Education: St. John’s College in Annapolis is one of the country’s oldest academic institutions.
