    (一)创设情境,导入新课[Create plots and scenes to guide the new lesson]

    This main content is to learn to talk about imaginary situations to learn the subjunctive mood and use the modal verb “should”for advice, so we can adopt the Audiovisual Guiding Method: First, the teacher can make simple conversations with the students. What do you want/need? What would you do if you…? Help the students answer these questions. Then the teacher presents some flashcards or pictures that people are in different situations and asks “What would you do if you were the people in the flashcard / picture?” Students discuss and give their opinions. “If I were the people, I’ d…”Write the key words and sentences on the blackboard. Make the student know the form of the Subjunctive mood.

    Then encourage the students to talk in pairs and discuss the situations. The teacher can ask the students to offer more interesting and embarrassing situations to discuss.

    (二)自读感知,整体把握[Pre-read to apperceive and grasp the whole]

    This main content is learn to talk about imaginary situations to learn the subjunctive mood and the modal verb “should” for advice. So it is designed into a speaking and listening lesson with a method of advancing step by step: In 1a -1c, present imaginary situations and ask the students what they would do. In 2a-2c, based on imaginary situations, use the modal verb “should”for advice. In 3a - 3b, students match each problem with the correct advice and role play the conversations. Then students finish part 4 in groups.

    (三)合作交流,解读探究[Cooperate and intercourse to unscramble and research]

    The main content in section A is to learn the target language:

    What would you do if you won a million dollars?

    I’d give it to charities.

    If I were you, I’d wear a shirt and tie.

    If I were you, I’d take an umbrella.

    Step 1演示[Demonstration]

    The teacher communicates with the students about imaginary situations.

    1.Free talk to present the usage of the subjunctive mood.

    (Teacher asks) What do you want to own, Jim?

    (Students answers) I want to have lots of money.

    (Teacher asks) What would you do if you had lots of money?

    (Students answers) I’d buy a car to travel around the world.

    2.The teacher shows some flashcards or pictures with people in different interesting and embarrassing situations.

    Step 2活动[Activities]

    Get the students to imagine different kinds of interesting and embarrassing situations, communicate with each other, using the subjunctive mood.

    Step 3体验[Experiences]

    (1) Students discuss the situations in part 1a and add more ideas on the list. Encourage the students to ask and answer in pairs about other situations.

    (2) Play the tape of part 1b and get the students listen and number the pictures that you hear in the order, finish the teaching task of part 1b.

    (3) Play the tape of part 2a and get the students listen and circle the reasons, finish the teaching task of part 2a.

    (4) Play the tape of part 2a again and get the students to listen and check the four things that Larry’s sister says to him. Finish the listening training task of part 2b. At the same time, make the students think if they were in this situation what they would do.

    Step 4活动[Activities]

    Get the students do pairwork, finish the teaching task of oral intercourse in part 2c. Let the students discuss these situations and give their advice.

    Step 5活动[Activities]

    Get the students to match each problem with the correct advice, and then encourage the students to give more advice for the problems in part 3a. Talk in pairs and role play conversations with partners. Finish the teaching tasks in part 3a and part 3b.

    Step 6活动[Activities]

    Get the students list all the problems at school or at home, ask for advice in groups, finish the teaching task in part 4.Make sure they can use the modal verb “should” for advice.

    要点直击[English notes]

    1.What would you do if you won the lottery?如果你赢了抽奖,你将打算干什么?

    【注意】(1)lottery名词,抽奖

    (2)if you won the lottery如果你赢(中)了抽奖。在此句中,if连接的句子是一种想象的情形,这种情形往往表示实现的可能性小或根本不可能实现,这时if后面的谓语动词常用动词的过去式(即虚拟语气),而主句中表示“将要干某事”要用“would do”形式;如果if后面有be的形式,be动词常用were而不用was。

    【点拨】if引导真实条件状语从句与if引导非真实条件状语从句的区别

    (1)if引导真实条件状语从句,表示的条件是“事实”或者在说话人看来“有可能实现的事情”,分为以下几种情况:

    ①预见性条件句。这类句子中,从句所预示的条件是前提,前提如能实现,主句所表示的另一件事情就会发生,否则就不会发生。在这类条件句中,从句动词常用一般现在时表示将来时间,主句通常带有情态动词。如:If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, I’ll go to Anqing.(如果明天不下雨,我将去安庆。)

    ②whenever型条件句。这类句子中,if相当于whenever或when,通常连接两个表示现在或过去习惯动作的分句,主句和从句的动词都用一般现在时或一般过去时。如:If it rains, I go to work by bus.(如果天下雨,我常乘公共汽车去上班。)

    ③引申性条件句。在这类句子中,主句所表示的情况是由从句所表示的情况引申出来的,如前提和结论的关系等。如:If he said that, he must be a fool.(如果他那样说,他一定是个笨蛋)

    (2)if引导非真实条件状语从句,表示的条件与事实相反或者在说话人看来是不大可能实现的事情。

    ①当从句表示与现在事实相反的条件时,从句中的谓语动词常用一般过去时或were 型的虚拟语气形式,主句动词常用would/should/could/might+动词原形。如:If I were you, I would help him.(如果我是你,我将帮助他。)

    ②当从句表示与过去事实相反的条件时,从句动词用过去完成时,主句用would/should/could/might+动词的完成时态(have+动词的过去分词)。如:If he had tried hard last term,he would have succeeded.(如果他上学期努力,他已经成功了。)

    ③当从句表示将来不大可能实现的条件时,从句动词一般用一般过去时或were/was +动词不定式(to do),主句动词用would/should/could/might+动词原形。如:What would you do if it snowed tomorrow?如果明天下雪怎么办?

    【应用】(1)If he comes, I’ll call you.如果他来,我就打电话给你。

    (2)If I’m busy in the daytime, I will do my homework in the evening.

    如果我白天忙,我就晚上做作业。

    (3)If I were you, I would ask him for help.

    如果我是你,我就向他寻求帮助。

    (4)If you lived in England, you could speak English well.

    如果你住在英国,你的英语可能就讲得很好。

    2.Look. This girl won a million dollars in the lottery.

    看,这个女孩在抽奖中赢了一百万。

    I’d give it to medical research.我将把它捐赠于医学研究。

    【注意】(1)million名词,“百万”和具体的数字连用时,没有复数形式;millions of 上百万的,表示泛数。

    (2)medical research医学研究。medical形容词,医学的、医疗的;research名词,调查,研究。

    【点拨】research名词,“调查、研究”,通常不与many或数字连用,强调为了发现新的事实或信息而进行“调查、研究”;此外,research还可用作不及物动词,research into sth 从事(对某问题等的)研究。

    【应用】

    (1)Last year he earned 5 million yuan.去年他挣了500万元。

    (2)Every year he receives millions of letters from all over the world.

    他每年收到来自全世界的几百万封来信。

    (3)He is busy with his medical research.他正忙于他的医学研究。

    3.If I were you, I’d wear a shirt and tie.如果我是你,我就穿衬衫系领带。

    【注意】(1)If I were you如果我是你,表示不可能的情况,故句中用了虚拟语气形式,be动词用were,即if...+动词过去式/were...would/should+动词原形。

    (2)tie,necktie名词,领带;此外,tie还可用作动词“捆、系”的意思。

    【应用】(1)If I were you, I would come here earlier.如果我是你,我就来早点。

    (2)Tie the tree to the top of the stick.把这棵树系到棍子的上部。

    4.I don’ t have a present. What if everyone else brings a present?

    我没有带礼物,万一别的人都带了礼物呢?

    【注意】(1)everyone else别的每一个人;形容词修饰不定代词,位置后置。

    (2)what if万一……怎么办?后接一陈述句。

    【点拨】(1)(even)if即使,就算

    (2)as if仿佛,好像

    (3)if only常表示愿望或未实现的条件,尤用于感叹句中。

    【应用】(1)What if he is out of his home?万一他外出了怎么办。

    (2)He said as if he was on a boat at sea.他说他仿佛在海里的一艘船上。

    5.I get nervous before big parties and then I get pimples.

    在大型的晚会之前我变得紧张并且(脸上)出现粉刺。

    What should I do?我该怎办?

    【注意】(1)get nervous变得紧张;get pimples长有粉刺

    (2)What should I do?我该怎么办?should用来表示征求建议,是情态动词后接动词原形。

    【应用】(1)They have no money to buy books. What should they do?(他们该怎么办?)

    (2)My parents got married in 1980.我的父母是在1980年结婚的。

    6.I’m too tired to do well.我太疲劳了,(结果)在考试中不能考好。

    【注意】too...to太……而不能……,too是程度副词,后接形容词或副词,to是动词不定式的体现形式(to do),表示否定意义,常可以和so...that+句子(如此……以致)转换。

    【点拨】但too...to用于以下两种形式时,则表示肯定意思。

    (1)当too后跟glad, easy, kind, ready, pleased时,too...to表示肯定意思。如:

    It’s too kind of you to have told me that.你真是好心告诉我那个。

    (2)too前有only, but, all, never修饰时,too...to也不表示否定意思。如:

    It’s never too late to learn.学习永远不迟。

    【应用】(1)He got up too late to catch the first train.

    他起得太迟了,不能赶上第一班火车。

    (2)You are never too old to enjoy the Christmas presents.大人也喜欢圣诞礼物。

    7.If I were you, I’d take a long walk before going go bed.

    如果我是你,上床睡觉之前我会散步走很长的路。

    【注意】(1)take a long walk散步走很长的路

    (2)before going to bed在上床睡觉之前= before I go to bed

    【点拨】在时间状语从句中,如果主句和从句的主语保持一致,从句中的主语可以省略,句中的动词需用动词ing形式。如:He went out after handing in his paper.(交上试卷后,他出去了)

    【应用】(1)He takes a long walk after supper every day.

    每天晚饭后,他散步走很长的路。

    (2)He gave up after learning for 2 years.他学了两年后放弃了。

    8.My parents won’t let me have one.我父母不愿意让我养一条狗。

    Dogs can be a lot of trouble.狗可能有许多麻烦。

    【注意】(1)let sb do sth让某人干某事

    (2)trouble不可数名词,麻烦,烦恼,苦恼;此外trouble还可用作动词,“烦恼,麻烦”。

    【点拨】(1)ask(look)for trouble(口)自讨苦吃,自寻烦恼

    (2)be in trouble处于困境(不幸等)

    (3)get into trouble(with)(与……)发生纠纷

    (4)get sb into trouble使某人陷入困境(窘迫)

    (5)make trouble for(为……)添麻烦,捣乱

    (6)take the trouble to do sth费神做某事,不辞辛苦地去做某事

    【应用】(1)When he comes, please let me know.他来的时候,请告知我。

    (2)What’s your trouble?你有什么麻烦?

    (3)When other people are in trouble, we should help them.

    当别人有麻烦时,我们应该帮助他。

    (四)应用迁移,巩固提高[Application and transfer, consolidation and improvement]

    1.Play games: Provide different kinds of interesting and embarrassing situations for the students to discuss. Ask the students to give their advice and write them down. Then students match the situations with the correct advice. This activity can help the students to practice the target language in this unit and improve the studying atmosphere.

    2.Imagine “you were a teacher, what would you do with your work?” Let the students discuss this interesting situation and give their own opinions. Make sure they can use the subjunctive mood correctly.“If I were a teacher, I’d…”This activity can not only help the students to practice the subjunctive mood, but also it can help the teacher and students to know each other better. It can make the students understand the teaching job and love their teachers. At the same time, the teacher can know what the students really want about their teachers.
