    (一)创设情境,导入新课[Create plots and scenes and guide the new lesson]

    Review and consolidate the usage of the subjunctive mood by making a personality survey. Make the students think about their own personality and have a diagnostic evaluation from the personality survey. So the teacher can teach section B using the task-based pedagogy. First, the teacher describes some students’ character using some adjectives, make the students to guess the meaning of these adjectives. Encourage the students to say more personality adjectives to describe people by helping them to make conversations. What are you like? I think I’m…Why do you think so? Because I would…if I...Then ask the students to fill in the blanks in part 1a and work in pairs in part 1b. Guide the students to finish the teaching tasks in part 1a and part 1b. Prepare for the next parts.

    (二)自读感知,整体把握[Pre-read to apperceive and grasp the whole]

    Review and consolidate the usage of the subjunctive mood, help the students to make a personality survey and have a diagnostic evaluation from the survey. Help them to improve their personality to be more confident. So section B is designed by four steps: In 1a - 1b, present the personality adjectives to prepare for the next personality survey. In 2a - 2c, make the students do a personality survey in pairs, using part 2a as an example. In 3a - 3b, reading and writing practice is designed to make the students know their own personality and improve it to be a confident person. In part 4, discuss the survey results in groups to practice the subjunctive mood.

    (三)合作交流,解读探究[Cooperate and intercourse to unscramble and research]

    The main content in section B is to talk about the personality. Make a personality survey and have a diagnostic evaluation about it to find out people’s personality. This can help the students improve their personality to be very confident.

    Step 1演示[Demonstration]

    The teacher communicates with the students about their classmates and presents some key adjectives of personality.

    Step 2活动[Activities]

    Get the students to practice conversations about personality after the model above. Make sure they can tell the personality from different kinds of actions.

    Step 3交流[Intercourse]

    Get the students to describe their own personality, discuss with their partners. Learn to tell the personality from different actions.

    Step 4体验[Experiences]

    1.Play the tape of part 2a, the students listen and check the questions Celia asks. Finish the teaching task of part 2a.

    2.Play the tape of part 2a again and circle Bill’s responses, finish the listening task of part 2b.

    Step 5活动[Activities]

    Get the students to make conversations using the materials in part 2a. Give them enough time to practice and guide them to tell what kind of personality from these actions.

    Step 6阅读[Reading]

    Get the students to read the personality survey results and fill in the results. Think what kind of personality Bill is and what kind of advice you can give to him, Finish the teaching task of part 3a.

    Step 7应用[Application]

    Get the students to write their own personality survey and make a personality survey, practice using the target language in this unit, finish the teaching task in part 3b.

    Step 8活动[Activities]

    Discuss the results of the personality survey and tell what kind of personality everyone is. Talk together and give some advice to improve the personality. Finish the teaching task in part 4.

    1.confident people aren’t afraid to speak in public.自信的人不害怕当众说话。

    【注意】(1)confident形容词,自信的,有把握的;confident people自信的人

    (2)be afraid to do sth害怕干某事

    (3)in public当众,公开的

    【点拨】confident形容词,“自信的”。be(fee1)confident of sth/doing sth/be(feel)confident that从句,有信心(感觉有信心)……

    confidence名词,信心,相信;have confidence in sb/sth对某人/事有信心。

    = He feels confident of passing the exam.

    (2)Mary is afraid to be late for school.玛丽害怕要迟到。

    【注意】(1)energetic people精力充沛的人。energetic形容词,有活力的,精力充沛的,energy名词,精力,活力。

    【应用】(1)He is hardly ever tired, is he?他几乎从不疲惫,不是吗?

    (2) He had so much energy that he did the work of three men.

    他精力旺盛,能做三个人的工作。

    = He was energetic enough to do the work of three men.

    【注意】permission名词,允许,许可,准许

    【点拨】(1)with(one’s)permission如果(某人)许可(同意)的话

    (2)give sb permission to do sth允许某人干某事

    (3)have one’s permission to do sth有某人的允许干某事

    【应用】(1)My mother gives me permission to watch TV for half an hour every day.

    我妈妈允许我每天看半个小时的电视。

    (2)You have my permission to leave.我准许你离开。

    4.I’d wait for her to introduce herself to me.我等她向我自我介绍。

    I’d invite her to have dinner at my house.我邀请她去我家吃饭。

    【注意】(1)wait for sb to do sth等着某人干某事

    (2)invite sb to do sth邀请某人干某事

    (3)introduce sb to sb把某人介绍给某人

    (2)He invites me to go fishing next Sunday.他邀请我下个星期天去钓鱼。

    5.You are probably pretty confident.你可能非常地自信。

    Social situations don’t bother you in the slightest.社交场合一点也不烦扰你。

    【注意】(1)pretty副词,相当,颇,非常;此外pretty还用作形容词,漂亮的,可爱的。

    (2)social situations社交场合;social形容词,社会的,社交的。

    (3)bother动词,打扰,扰乱,烦扰。

    (4)slight形容词,微不足道的,极不重要的;slightest是最高级形式;in the slightest也,根本;not in the slightest毫不,一点也不,相当于not at all.

    【点拨】bother sb to do sth烦扰某人干某事

    bother(oneself/one’s head)(about)焦虑,为……而操心或焦急

    bother(about)doing sth/bother to do sth麻烦做某事

    【应用】(1)That man is always bothering me to lend him money.

    那个人老是闹着要我借钱给他。

    (2)Stop bothering your father. He is very busy.不要再打扰你爸爸,他很忙。

    (3)You don’t bother me in the slightest.你一点也不烦扰我。

    6.You are outgoing and fairly confident.你性格活泼并且相当自信。

    You have plenty of friends and you enjoy the company of other people.

    你有许多朋友并且你喜欢别人的陪伴。

    【注意】(1)fairly副词,相当,完全。

    (2)plenty of很多的,足够的,大量的;plenty形容词,很多的,足够的。

    (3)the company of other people别人的陪伴。company名词,陪伴,伴随。

    【点拨】如何区分使用plenty of, a lot of/lots of, many, much

    (1)plenty of很多的,足够的,后接可数名词复数或不可数名词,常用于肯定句中。

    (2)a lot of/lots of许多的,大量的,后接可数名词复数或不可数名词,用法大致与plenty of相同。

    (3)many许多,后接可数名词复数。

    (4)much许多,后接不可数名词。

    【应用】(1)This is a fairly easy book.这是一本相当浅易的书。

    (2)There are plenty of/a lot of/lots of/many eggs in the house.家里有许多蛋。

    7.Your friends would probably say that you are easy to get along with.

    你的朋友可能都说与你很容易相处。

    【注意】get along with与……相处= get on with

    【点拨】(1)get along with sb与(某人)友好相处,相处和谐

    (2)get along with sth(某事)进展

    【应用】(1)He gets along well with his friends.

    他和他的朋友们相处甚好。

    (2)How is he getting along with his English?他的英语学习情况如何?

    8.You like talking to one or two people rather than to group.

    你喜欢和一两个人交谈而不愿和一群人交谈。

    You would also rather stay at home and read a good book than go to a party.

    你也宁愿呆在家看一本好书而不愿去参加晚会。

    【注意】rather than宁愿,而不是,常和would/had构成句型结构,would/had rather...than;也可用作rather than...would

    【点拨】rather, pretty, quite, fairly这几个程度副词都可修饰形容词或副词,都有“相当,很‘的意思,但在使用的语气和程度上是有区别的。

    (1)rather是四个词中语气最强,程度最深的,可与名词、动词、形容词或副词的比较级连用;与形容词连用放在不定冠词(a/an)之前或后均可,但必须放在定冠词(the)之后。

    (2)pretty常用于口语中,语气比rather弱,但强于quite和fairly,常修饰形容词或副词。

    (3)quite语气比fairly强,可与动词、副词连用;与形容词连用放在不定冠词(a/an)的前面。

    (4)fairly是四个词中语气最弱的,使用时,不能与too、形容词或副词的比较级、动词或名词连用。

    【应用】(1)I would rather run than swim.

    我宁愿跑步也不愿游泳。

    (2)I’d rather have the small one than the large one.我宁愿要小的而不要大的。

    (3)He did rather bad in the sports meeting. He lost most of his games.

    在运动会中他做得相当差,他输了绝大多数比赛。

    (4)It’s not as cold as yesterday. But it’s still pretty cold.

    今天不像昨天那么冷,但还是相当冷。

    (5)It’s too early so there are quite a few students in the classroom.

    太早了,所以教室里只有相当几个学生。

    (6)This is a fairly easy book for children. You can buy one for your son.

    对小孩而言这是一本相当浅易的书,你可以给你儿子买一本。

    9.I’m really tired, I’ve been studying all day.我真的累极了,我整天一直在学习。

    I don’t like making speeches. I feel shy talking in front of many people.

    我不喜欢做演讲,在许多人面前说话我觉得害羞。

    【注意】(1)have been studying一直在学习,是现在完成进行时,have/has been doing

    (2)all day整天

    (3)made a speech/make speeches做演讲

    【应用】(1)I have been learning English for 5 years.

    一直以来,我学习英语有五年了。

    (2)This famous scientist will make a speech in our school next week.

    这个著名的科学家下个星期将在我们学校做一次演讲。

    【注意】(1)let...down使……失望或沮丧

    (2)come up with(针对问题等)提出,想出

    【点拨】(1)let sb down使某人失望或沮丧

    (2)let sth down放低,放下

    【应用】(1)Study hard! You’ll never let yourself down.(你不会让自己失望的)

    (2) One day he came up with a good idea to solve this problem.

    (他想出了一个解决这个问题的好办法)

    (四)应用迁移巩固提高[Application and transfer, consolidation and improvement]

    1.Provide lots of embarrassing and dangerous situations for students to discuss so as to train their abilities of solutions for problems, eg, What would you do if you were robbed / you were badly ill? etc. This activity can not only help the students to practice the target language in this unit, and it can help them develop their knowledge and experience or improve their abilities.

    2.Make a personality survey of your family, friends or yourself. This activity can help people know themselves better. It can help to improve the personality and get on well with others. At the same time, it helps the students practice and understand the usage of the target language in this unit.

    (五)总结反思,拓展延伸[Summarize and ponder, develop and stretch]

    小结[Summary]

    The content of this unit is to learn the usage of the subjunctive mood and the modal verb “should” for advice by talking about imaginary situations. Learn to make a personality survey and tell the results of the personality survey to improve the personality.

    讨论交流[Discussion and intercourse]

    What would you do if you…/I don’t...what should I do? The teacher can organize a discussion about different situations. Encourage the students to join in the discussion and share the opinions with them together. This activity can help the students review and consolidate the target language in this unit. It can also help the students develop their abilities and know themselves better.

    应用[Application]

    Organize a discussion meeting about the student who is in trouble or on embarrassing situations. Students should talk together to help him, giving him some advice. Make sure that the student should use the subjunctive mood to give advice. “If I were him, I’ d...”This activity can not only help the student who is in trouble or on embarrassing situations, but also build up the spirit of unity, friendship and mutually helping. On the other hand, it can help the students practice using the target language in this unit.

    反思[Pondering]

    1.The students should grasp the usage of the subjunctive mood and the modal verb “should”for advice, so the teacher should make a proper conclusion for the grammatical rules in the section so as to help the students know about this grammar clearly. The teacher should encourage the students to understand this grammar by using it. So it is necessary to have enough materials to practice.

    2.The topic of this unit is interesting and embarrassing situations. Learn the usage of the subjunctive mood and the modal verb “should”for advice by talking about imaginary situations. The teacher shouldn’t pay much attention to the grammatical teaching during his / her teaching design. Development of the students’ abilities is also very important. The teacher should help the students imagine different kinds of situations and think how to give their advice. Help the students organize a personality survey and try to improve their personality. Use different kinds of teaching steps to encourage the students to join in the discussion so that the students can learn English more actively and show great interest in English learning.
