“Well you know it was very
interesting because at first, you know, I am not happy about the
ways the Chinese were treating the Tibetans because I don’t think
anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And so I have been very
concerned about how to think and what to do about that because I
don’t like that. And I had been this, you know, concerned about,
oh how should we deal with the Olympics because they are not being
nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a good friend of mine.
And all these earthquake and stuff happened and I thought: Is that
karma, when you are not nice that bad things happen to you? And
then I got a letter, from the Tibetan Foundation that they want to
go and be helpful. And that made me cry. And they ask me if I would
write a quote about that and I said,“I would.”And it was a big
lesson to me, that sometimes you have to learn to put your head
down and be of service even to people who are not nice to you. And
that’s a big lesson for me...”
分析一下这段话，莎朗·斯通实际上表达了她的一个“大感悟”（big lesson），这个感悟包含了三层意思：
第一，我喜欢西藏，因为中国对西藏人不好，所以我不高兴。
第二，我曾经觉得，地震该是中国对西藏人不好的“报应”吧。
第三，我想明白了，对“不善的人”，我们也应该帮助他们。
莎朗·斯通的这三层意思最关键的其实还不是她“曾觉得”（thought）过地震是中国的报应（karma），这只是一个前提和一个结论的中间“推理”过程。请注意，她的前提假设是“中国对西藏人不好”（the ways the Chinese were treating the Tibetans），最后推广到“中国对人不善”(people who are not nice to you)。如果说西方人中很少有人敢明目张胆地说地震是中国的“报应”，但是认为“中国对西藏人不好”、“中国对人不善”的西方人绝不是个别的，这才是问题的实质。如果我们无法改变西方人的这个错误认识，那么西方人中还会有很多人公开、半公开或者私底下认为这是中国的“报应”。
莎朗·斯通 “报应”说出炉后，不仅遭到中国人的痛斥，西方媒体也感到震惊，称其为idiot（傻瓜），英国媒体还用她的名字做文字游戏：Sharon Stoned（莎朗挨板砖）。但是即便是这些对莎朗·斯通拍砖的西方媒体，也认可莎朗·斯通“报应”说的前提和推论。所以，对莎朗·斯通固然应该抵制，相信她必然会因为她的胡言乱语遭到“报应”，但中国人面临的更大挑战是如何才能改变西方人“中国对西藏人不好”、“中国对人不善”这个挥之不去的念头，这可能需要几年甚至几十年的时间。
