在我转自malingcat的博客当做如是观的那篇文章《杂碎》后面，有朋友留言：

I happened to know the paiting.

"Chop Suey" is but a restaurant's name (or probably a CAFE's name). It can't be interpreted to be "所以我跟你说过啊，看画也要调查一下时代背景。此画画于1929年，具体月份不知道。我疑心华尔街崩盘发生在10月29日，看画中人的穿着，也像是冬季装束。是不是画家想告诉人们：大萧条来了，时髦女士们要勤俭节约，那就吃吃杂碎好了。" The painting was completed in January of 1929, nothing to do with the Great Depression. 

In the States, restaurants are pretty often named after chinese dishs. Sometimes, the dish in name is NOT available in restaurants otherwise. 

"the picture is meant as a joke by the notoriously misogynistic artist, for whom the term implied a culinary mishmash. As we see no food in front of the women in the picture, "chop suey" is more likely what they're talking rather than eating at the moment --that is, trivial effusions. (Walter Wells, Silent Theater: The Art of Edward Hopper, London/New York: Phaidon, 2007 )

我把留言转递去了文章主人那里，malingcat回复说：

好久没上来，今天才看见。
我知道“杂碎”也是这家餐馆的名字，文字中我不是提到窗外那个大店召？这样的名为“杂碎”的中餐馆从旧金山到纽约，凡是有唐人街的地方都有，特别是在上世纪初。在中餐馆的各种档次中，普遍算是中等偏下的。
至于这幅画的完成时间，不知道那个朋友查的什么资料。我查了几种，只是说1929。愿闻其详。
无论如何，谢谢。

我也很想知道“January”的出处。如果留言的朋友看到的话，解说一下可好？
