英语修辞赏析

        文学作品主美,修辞能使语言更有表现力,营造想象空间,给作品增添无穷的韵味。本博主常年教授《英国文学》这门课,通过不少实例,领略了修辞之美,特此将这些例子汇总,以便大家欣赏和学习。所有例子都选自英语专业本科生教材《英国文学经典选读》(刁克利编著),也有少量例子出自美国文学作品中。

1. paradox

MEN in great place are thrice servants: servants of the sovereign or state; servants of fame; and servants of business. So as they have no freedom; neither in their persons, nor in their actions, nor in their times. It is a strange desire, to seek power and to lose liberty: or to seek power over others, and to lose power over a man’s self. The rising unto place is laborious; and by pains, men come to greater pains; and it is sometimes base; and by indignities, men come to dignities. The standing is slippery, and the regress is either a downfall, or at least an eclipse, which is a melancholy thing.
出自培根的散文《论高位》的开头部分,篇幅不短的一段文字,看似矛盾对立,却顺理成章,发人深省。

 

2. metonymy; parallelism

莎士比亚的第66首十四行诗中,用了大量的metonymy,把这个世界的是非颠倒,黑白不分描写得淋漓尽致,从中体会到莎士比亚从草根阶层的一名屌丝逆袭为一代文豪的艰辛。此外,大量排比的使用增强了语势,烘托出作者悲愤之情。

3. antithesis

4. simile

She Walks in Beauty
by Lord Byron
She walks in beauty, like the night
  Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
  And all that's best of dark and bright
  Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
  Thus mellowed to that tender light
  Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
  Had half impaired the nameless grace
  Which waves in every raven tress,
  Or softly lightens o'er her face;
  Where thoughts serenely sweet express
  How pure, how dear their dwelling place.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
  So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
  The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
  But tell of days in goodness spent,
  A mind at peace with all below,
  A heart whose love is innocent!
    拜伦这样感性的诗人的作品怎么可能少得了修辞。另外一首诗歌“哀希腊”里,反复使用Fill high the bowl with samian wine就很好地传递了诗人从希望到失望到绝望的情感的转变。

据说爱伦坡这首诗前后写了将近十年,可以说经过反复修改润色,字斟句酌,难怪字里行间弥漫着绵绵的音韵美。
