“Minimalism” Berlin Sony Center
Covering 2.6 ha area and with a total investment of 750 million euros, the Sony Center is located in Potsdamer Platz and opened in 2000. Integrating the traditional European street and American contemporary shopping mall together, the buildings in different styles with minimalist landscape and the classical city interact to push Berlin in the forefront of the new contemporary architecture.
The buildings with distinctive feature and full of modern and
technology is designed by American architect Helmut Jahn. Seven
independent buildings including Sony European Headquarters, Media
Center, Office Building, Leisure & Entertainment facilities,
etc. enclose inwards; form the center plaza of 4000m2 with a huge
tent made by steel, connecting rod, coated glass and fabrics, and
radiate out to the pedestrian streets strengthening the continuity
and sense of wholeness of the public room and providing visitors a
panoramic view.
The landscape by Minimalist Master Designer Peter Walker is
concise and simple, clean and neat. Repeat the composition form of
3D spatial concept in the design and set a half-moon-shaped flower
bed between the ground and basement. Part of circular water pool is
on the plaza and part suspended on the windows as the transparent
eaves of the basement, bringing the fantastic change of shadow and
light. The glass, metal, stones materials skillfully combine and
connect plants echoing with the buildings to shape the colorful
public space as well as humanized scale and the kind
atmosphere.
