形容词的原级和比较级，都有其多种特殊的否定句式，表达着不同的否定含意。至于说多余否定句，听来这名称就有些陌生，其实只要接触到具体句例，就会知道这类句子是早就见过的，只不过没有这归类而已。

⑴比较否定句

含有否定词的比较句叫做比较否定句(comparative negative sentence)。英语比较等级的三级中，同级比较和比较级都包含有几种否定句式。英语中表示比较的句式相当多，但如果句中插进一个否定词，其意义和用法就很难掌握了。这类否定句子理解起来有一定难度，所以翻译之时需得慎之又慎。

①no better than——和…一样／实际等于…   

例：He is no better than a beggar. 他实际上等于一个乞丐。

He is no better than a shop-keeper. 他顶多不过是一个店老板罢了。

The invalid is no better than he was yesterday. 病人的情况和昨天一样。

He has no better a say in the matter than I have. 他和我一样在这件事上没有发言权。

 

②no less … than——和…一样／不亚于…

例：He is no less active than he used to be. 他和从前一样活跃。

His mind is no less alert than yours. 他的思路和你的一样敏捷。

He shouted no less loudly than others. 他的喊声同样大得很。

She’s no less capable than the others. 她的能力并不比别人弱。

 

③not. . . any more than／no more. . . than——同…一样不

例：He is no more able to read German than I am. 他和我一样都不懂德语。

This story is no more interesting than that one. 这个故事和那个故事一样没有趣味。

He is not a poet any more than I am a scholar. 我不是一个学者，他也不是一个诗人。

I could no more do that than you. I could not do that any more than you. 你不能做这件事，我也不能做。

 

④not so much. . . as——与其…不如…

例：He is not so much a writer as a reporter. 他与其说是个作家，不如说是个记者。

I don’t so much dislike him as hate him. 我与其说不喜欢他，不如说我恨他。

Success lies not so much as in luck as in hard work. 与其说成功在于运气不如说是辛勤努力。

Oceans don't so much divide the world as unite it. 与其说海洋分隔了世界，不如说海洋联结了世界。

 

⑤nothing like——没有什么能比得上…【此like,介词或连词, 意比较“如同／像”】

例：It looks nothing like a horse. 这完全看不出像马。【此like介词】

There is nothing like home. 金窝银窝，不如自己的草窝。

There is nothing like leather for shoes. 做鞋用皮革再好没有了。

It’s nothing like what it used to be. 这完全不是老样子。【此like连词】

So far as I know, nothing like this has ever happened before. 据我所知，以前从未发生过这种事情。

 

⑥nothing like／near as／so ... as——远远不像…那样

例：The book is nothing like as difficult as I expected. 这本书远没有我想像的那么难懂。

His analysis of the poem is nothing like as penetrating as yours. 他对这首诗的分析远没有你的分析那样透彻。

This novel is nothing near so interesting as that one. 这篇小说远远不及那篇小说有趣。

This building is not inferior to that one but nothing near so large. 这建筑物并不比那一座差，只是远不及那座大。

 

⑵多余否定句

英语中有一种否定形式，按照全句的意思来讲，应该用肯定形式，可有时却用了not或no等否定词；或者说，按照全句的意思，应该用否定形式，但却出现了词意相互抵消的两个否定词语。这种不必要的否定被称为“多余否定(pleonastic negation)”, 含这种否定形式的句子被称为“多余否定句(pleonastic negative sentence)”。

在汉语里也存在这种否定现象，如：“好不痛快”、“好不舒坦”、“好不热闹”、“好不快捷”等赞美语中的“不”，就相当于英语多余否定句中的not或no-word。英语多余否定句可以归纳为下列五种形式因素

①否定词的重复所造成的多余否定

在非标准英语中，常可见到在一个否定词语后又出现了一个否定词，这种形式貌似“否定之否定”肯定句，但表示的却是一种否定的意义。

例：I don’t want nothing. = I don’t want anything. = I want nothing. 我什么也不想要。

I didn’t tell nobody. = I didn’t tell anybody. 我谁都没告诉。

There isn’t no such a thing. = There isn’t such a thing. 没有这样的事情。

You didn’t hear me, neither. = You didn’t hear me, either. 你也不听我的话。

I couldn’t hardly believe my eyes. = I could hardly believe my eyes. 我几乎不相信自己的眼睛。

I don’t know nothing about the matter. = I don’t know anything about the matter. 我对此事一无所知。

这是一种非标准的英语，在逻辑上也不合理，但作为一种语言习惯还是经常可以见到的。这种用法常出现在俗语中，或是出现在文化层次较低人的口语中。

 

②在wonder、care等 + if／whether...not句式中的not

一般说来，if引导的宾语从句的谓语动词可与not结合，如：I don’t care if he doesn’t come.而whether引导的宾语从句中，谓语不可用否定形式，如：I don’t care whether he comes or not. 不可说成：I don’t care whether he doesn’t come.

但根据英语习惯，在wonder、know、ask等动词和表语形容词(not) sure等之后，whether从句的谓语动词可用否定形式。

例：I don’t care if he doesn’t come. 我不在乎他是否来。

I wonder whether she will not come. 我想知道她会不会来。

I don’t care whether or not he comes. 我不在意他是否来。

I wonder if／whether she isn’t mistaken. 我想知道她是否错了。

I wonder whether I cannot get any more. 我不知道是否可以多拿一些。

I wonder whether／if he doesn’t expect too much from her. 我不知道他是否对她期望太多。

I’m not sure whether／if he doesn’t expect too much from her. 我说不准他是否对她期望过高。

 

③not与某些意含否定的词语连用而失否定作用  ／／／／／

not与某些词语连用，由于词语本身的语义【往往含有两种相反的意义】关系，not已失去了它的否定作用。

比较：I want to have a sort of cloth that will wear. = I want to have a sort of cloth that will wear well.

我希望有一种耐穿的布料。【wear在此句中作“耐用”、“经穿”解】

I want to have a sort of cloth that will not wear. = I want to have a sort of cloth that will not wear out easily.

我希望有一种不容易穿破的布料。【wear在此句中作“容易损坏”、“穿破用旧”解】

 

④用在某些感叹句中的not

例：If he isn’t the laziest guy on earth! 他是天下最懒的家伙了！

What nonsense would he not talk! 什么胡话他都说得出口！

What dirty means would the fellow not resort to! 什么卑鄙的手段那个家伙都会使出来的！

If the walls of that room could speak, what an amount of blundering and capricious cruelty would they not bear witness to!

如果那房间的墙壁会说话，(这房间里曾发生过的)多少错误而任性的残暴行为，它们都会说出来作证！

 

⑤用在“It is...+否定从句”句式中的否定词

例：It is a long lane that has no turning. 路必有弯。

It is a good horse that never stumbles. 马有失蹄。

It is a good workman that never blunders. 智者千虑，必有一失。

It is an ill wind that blows nobody good. 没有使所有人都受害的坏事。
