硕人其颀，衣锦褧衣。齐侯之子，卫侯之妻。东宫之妹，邢侯之姨，谭公维私。

 

注释： 

1、硕：大。硕人：指卫庄公夫人庄姜。颀（祈qí）：长貌。其颀：《玉篇》引作“颀颀”。古代男女以硕大颀长为美。

2、褧（炯jiǒng）衣：女子嫁时在途中所穿的外衣，用枲（洗xǐ）麻之类的材料制成。这句是说在锦衣上加褧衣。第一个“衣”字是动词。

3、齐侯：指齐庄公。子：女儿。 

4、卫侯：指卫庄公。 

5、东宫：指齐国太子（名得臣）。东宫是太子所住的宫。这句是说庄姜和得臣同母，表明她是嫡出。

6、邢：国名，在今河北省邢台县。姨：妻的姊妹。 

7、谭：国名，在今山东省历城县东南。维：犹“其”。女子称谓姊妹的丈夫为“私”。

 

手如柔荑，肤如凝脂，领如蝤蛴，齿如瓠犀，螓首蛾眉，巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮。

 

8、柔荑（yí）：荑是初生的茅，已见《静女》篇注。嫩茅去皮后洁白细软，所以用来比女子的手。 

9、凝脂：凝冻着的脂油，既白且滑。

10、领：颈。蝤蛴（囚齐qiú qí）：天牛之幼虫，其色白身长。

11、瓠（壶hù）：葫芦类。犀（xī）：瓠中的子叫做“犀”，因其洁白整齐，所以用来形容齿的美。

12、螓（秦qín）：虫名，似蝉而小，额宽广而方正。蛾眉：蚕蛾的眉（即触角），细长而曲。人的眉毛以长为美，所以用蛾眉作比。

13、倩：酒靥之美。口颊含笑的样子。 

14、盼：黑白分明。 

 

硕人敖敖，说于农郊。四牡有骄，朱幩镳镳。翟茀以朝。大夫夙退，无使君劳。

 

15、敖敖：高貌。 

16、说（税shuì）：停息。农郊：近郊。

17、四牡：驾车的四匹牡马。骄：壮貌。 

18、朱幩（坟fén）：马口铁上用红绸缠缚做装饰。镳镳（标biāo）：盛多貌。 

19、翟茀（dífú）：山鸡羽饰车。女子所乘的车前后都要遮蔽起来，那遮蔽在车后的东西叫做“茀”，“翟茀”是茀上用雉羽做装饰。朝：是说与卫君相会。

20、“大夫”二句是说今日群臣早退，免使卫君劳于政事。 

 

河水洋洋，北流活活。施罛濊濊，鳣鲔发发。葭菼揭揭，庶姜孽孽，庶士有朅。

 

21、河：指黄河。洋洋：水盛大貌。黄河在卫之西齐之东，庄姜从齐到卫，必须渡河。

22、活活（括kuò）：水流声。 

23、施罛（孤gā）：撒鱼网。濊濊（豁huò）：拟声词，撒网入水之声。

24、鳣（zhān）：黄鱼。鲔（wěi）：鳝鱼。发发（拨bō）：鱼碰网时尾动貌。诗意似以水和鱼喻庄姜的随从之盛。《蔽苟》篇云：“敝苟在梁，其鱼唯唯。其子归止，其从如水。”与此相似。25、葭（加jiā）：芦。菼（毯tǎn）：荻。揭揭：高举貌。这里写芦荻的高长似与“庶姜”“庶士”的高长作联想。

26、庶姜：指随嫁的众女。孽孽（niè）：高长貌。 

27、庶士：指齐国护送庄姜的诸臣。朅（洁jié，一读怯qiè）：武壮高大貌。

The belle beyond compare,

Wears a coat of silk rare .

Coming of Marquis Qi,

Marquis Song she'll marry

She's sister of the prince;

Her sister’s a marquise.

One more is a duchess.

 

Like young reed her hands seem;

Brows curved, forehead square,

Her neck, like jade so fair,

Her teeth like gourd seed glare.

Her lips quiver and smile

Her eyes the world beguile.

 

The belle raises her head,

Her cart near a farmstead.

The four steeds look so brave;

From bits the trappings wave.

Adorned cart, painted yoke,

They proceed to the duke.

Retire, lords and all such

The river’s broad and deep;

Its billows northward leap.

When the net is drown taught,

Croakers and eels are caught.

The reeds in the wind wave;

Her maids lithely behave.

Her fingers were like the blades of the young white-grass;

Her skin was like congealed ointment;

Her neck was like the tree-grub;

Her teeth were like melon seeds;

Her forehead cicada-like; her eyebrows like [the antenne of] the silkworm moth;

What dimples, as she artfully smiled!

How lovely her eyes, with the black and white so well defined!

When she halted in the cultivated suburbs.

Strong looked her four horses,

With the red ornaments so rich about their bits.

The waters of the He, wide and deep,
