比尔正在机场排队买票。和他平行的另一排队伍中有个人肩上挎着一个高尔夫球袋。由于队伍很长，航空公司的售票手续又非常缓慢，比尔和他开始了交谈。

当比尔称赞他的高尔夫球袋时，他非常高兴。他自豪地说，自己参加了美国职业高尔夫球锦标赛。

然后，他将话题转向比尔，问了一个所有高尔夫球手都会问的问题：“你打高尔夫球吗？”

比尔摇了摇头：“我以前打过。但我放弃了。因为我打得不好。我的入洞一直在70杆以下。”

在说出“70杆以下”之前，比尔有一个长长的呼吸停顿。

“没错。”比尔确认。

注：PGA是美国职业高尔夫协会（Professional Golfers' Association of America）的简称。每年8月由它举办的年度锦标赛也被称作“美国职业高尔夫锦标赛（PGA Championship）”。在18个洞的国际标准球场，标准杆是72杆。职业选手通常在67-80杆之间。业余选手如果能在70杆以下，则被视为高手。

原文： I Used to Golf

Bill was standing in a ticket line at airport，and a fellow in a line parallel to hise had a golf bag slung over his shoulder。Since the line was long and airline ticketing is a slow process at best，they struck up a conversation。

He brightened when Bill admired his golf bag，and he proudly stated that he was on the PGA Tour。

Then he turned to Bill and asked the question all golfers ask：“Do you play？”

Bill shook his head：“I used to，but I quit because I wasn't very good。I shot consistently in the lower seventies。”

There was a long，low in-take of breath，then “The lower seventies”。

“Yes。”Bill admitted。

“Consistently？”the golfer queried admiringly。

“Every hole。”Bill confessed。
