法源寺始建于唐朝。唐代的第二位国君、唐太宗李世民，曾亲统大军东征高丽。为悼念此次征战中阵亡的将士，遂于贞观十九年（公元645年）下诏，在幽州城东南隅兴修一座寺庙，历经五十一年，于武后万岁通天元年（公元696年）建成，并赐名“悯忠寺”。安史之乱时，曾更名为“顺天寺”。唐中和二年（公元882年），悯忠寺被火烧毁，后又重新修建。五代时，曾一度被改为“尼庵”。明正统二年（公元1437年），又对此寺进行修葺，并改名为“崇福寺”。清雍正十二年（公元1734年）改建，称“法源寺”。
　　法源寺坐北朝南，占地面积6700平方米，建筑规模宏大，结构严谨，采用中轴对称格局，由南至北依次有山门、钟鼓楼、天王殿、大雄宝殿、悯忠台、净业堂、无量殿、大悲坛、藏经阁、大遍觉堂、东西廊庑等，共七进六院，布局严正，宽阔庞大，是北京城内历史最为悠久的古寺庙建筑群。
　　天王殿，内供弥勒菩萨化身---布袋和尚，两侧为四大天王。大雄宝殿上有乾隆御书“法海真源”匾额，内供释迦牟尼佛及文殊、普贤，两侧分列十八罗汉。观音阁，又称悯忠阁，陈列法源寺历史文物。净业堂内供明代五方佛。大悲坛，现辟为历代佛经版本展室，陈列唐以来各代藏经及多种文字经卷，蔚为大观。藏经楼，现为历代佛造像展室，陈列自东汉至明清历代佛造像精品数十尊，各具神韵，尤其是明代木雕佛涅盘像，长约十米，是北京最大卧佛。寺内花木繁多，初以海棠闻名，今以丁香著称，至今全寺丁香成林，花开时节，香飘数里，为京城艳丽胜景。

　天王殿内正中供奉着明代制作的弥勒菩萨化身布袋和尚铜像，高1.12米，袒胸露怀，欢天喜地。
