漠河县位于黑龙江省西北部，大兴安岭山脉北麓，地处东经121°12'至127°00'，50°11'至53°33'，是中国最北、纬度最高的县份，素有“神州北极”的美誉。

北极村原名漠河村，早在1860年(清咸丰十年)这里就有人居住1888年吉林知府李金镛奉命到漠河开办金矿，漠河村进入繁盛时期，由此成了黄金之路，1906年(光绪三十二年)置卡伦；1909年(宣统元年)设总卡衙门；1914年(民国三年)为设治局公署驻地；1917年由设治局改升为二等县域所在地；1947年并入呼玛县；1981年漠河重新建县，将漠河乡、兴安乡划归漠河县。北极村为今北极乡政府所在地。

北极村在祖国版图上有着不可比拟的地缘优势，是祖国北部“天涯”，如果把中国地图比作一只金鸡，北极村就在金鸡冠的顶尖上，有“不夜城”之称，是全国观赏北极光和白夜奇景的最佳之处。
