JARDINS des FLEURS。

Appreciation towards AMKK for providing the following description:

Artist and designer Azuma Makoto was born in 1976 and runs a haute couture flower shop
called JARDINS des FLEURS in Moto-Azabu, Tokyo. His work with plants and flowers also
extends into personal artistic practice and client work where he creates a wide variety
of sculptures, installations and objects using tress, leaves, moss, and other plants
both organic and artificial. One of his most recent exhibitions, Collapsible Leaves at
Eye of Gyre Gallery involved a remarkable collection of suspended and mounted
sculptures made of tightly folded and layered leaves. The pieces are unique in that I
imagine they must have required rapid assembly a single leaf at a time, and yet look as
if they are naturally occurring objects.

Makoto Azuma has been in the flower business since 2002, and is an owner of the haute-
couture floral shop,“JARDINS des FLEURS” in Aoyama, Tokyo. As a flower artist, he has
been actively participating in art exhibitions, performance, design etc… all over the
world.

From 2005, he has been holding solo exhibitions in cities like New York, Paris and
Germany. In 2009, he found an experimental laboratory “Azuma Makoto Botanical Research
Institute” and ever since then, he has been expanding art activities pursuing
infinitive potential of plants.

Every activity of Makoto Azuma focuses on elevating value of flowers and plants by
finding unique and mysterious forms that they posses. Respecting the existence of
nature and keeping its dignity, he converts and expresses these beautiful elements to
aesthetic level of artwork.
