I was recently diagnosed with Empty Nose (sinus) Syndrome,
Resolved Question:
I was
recently diagnosed with Empty Nose (sinus) Syndrome, as a result of
a medial turbinectomy 10 years ago. The feelings of sinus
pressure/burning, headaches and associatedfatigue have
a dramatic affect my life. I was told nothing could be done to help
me with my symptoms except a nose spray that consists of sesame oil
with a rose/geranium blend. I was told thousands/millions of people
are affected by this. Have you heard of this and is there anything
I can do to feel better?,
Background: I have seen 2 ENTs, an allergist, chiropractor, accupunturist, pulmonologist and even had a sleep study. They found I have some allergies (allergy injections for 1 1/2 years didn't help), slight asthma ( I use an inhaler prn), sleep study was negative, acupuncture didn't help.
Any advice you can give would be helpful. Thank you, K

DearCustomer
I empathize with your condition--it must be painful. After doing some research on ENS, what is causing the pain is caused due to dryness and infection as the removed turbinates are no longer there to provide mucus, enzymes, and cilia to protect against infection. What is recommended in the literature are the following:
1. Pulsatile irrigation with added moisturizers and antibiotics is thought to be helpful
2.Radiofrequency treatment (called somnoplasty)
3. Warm compresses to the sinus area--increases blood flow
4.Avoid strong odors--take a little spray bottle to rinse out offensive odors, including perfumes
5. Avoid skiing and winter sports, which can be hard on patients with ENS
6. Drink lots of hot tea and spray moisturizers regularly
7. Avoid flying if possible
Please read the following link for additional useful information. Hope this helps:)
